People handling diatomacious earth need to wear breathing filter to prevent inhaling it...it works on the lungs like volcanic dust.....not a good thing to inhale.

We've been using Diatomaceous Earth for many years. Foodgrade DE has never caused the dogs or the humans in our family any problems at all. One reads both sides on the internet as far as safe to breathe or not. Experience has proven it quite safe for us. We use it for the dogs and puppies internally against parasites and externally against fleas on the rare occasion we see one. It does cause quite a bit of fine dust in the house, however, when the dogs come back in after being dusted. But it has been very effective for us. And being that its effectiveness is mechanical rather than chemical, there is no chance of the parasites building up a resistance to it. The recipe for success with DE is to give enough as far as daily amount and to do it for a long enough time. We simply do one month on DE and one month off. We add it to the dogs' food and mix in a bit of water.

Why won't your Vet give the tapeworm shot at least to start you off.  Then go online and get the pills for the 3-4 month follow up if needed.

You can google tapeworm meds and get many choices some  are at local feed stores

If you want a brand name you can look up Bayer's Drontal Plus that gets rid of all worms cost more or you can get Bayer's Droncit just for tapes

Non brand names or good too, one is Tailwinds I thinks. You need the same chemical as in the Bayer product.

Just be sure you give the amount for the weight of the dog or it will not work  This is not a matter if you are a little short then it will worm at least a little  I weigh my dog and go 10 - 20 pounds over in the dosage.

Western Rider: My vet will not use the shot anymore, says it causes undue pain to the dog...

PS: I would not go overdose on the Drontal Plus, as I stated in my earlier post, this dog is young, 5 months and my boy about that same age had problems with Drontal Plus, so go with correct dosage on the Drontal Plus, you can go a bit over on the panacur but not the Drontal. good luck Nan

Thanks Nan for the info on the Drontal Plus I have never used it  I have many time used it on puppies and never had a problem with the dosage.  A 30 pound pup has had no problem with a 40 pound dosage.  Cutting those pills exact is ner impossible.

I have never seen an adverse reaction or pain from the shot.
