for Bi- color pups the main thing to look for is what the black hairs on the toes do as the pup ages some,it not uncommon for a true  black and tan to have black hairs or a muddied looking grey paws at 5 weeks only to vanish completely by 6 months, I can normaly tell by maybe 10 to 16 weeks of age if a dog will be a true genetic Bi-color or not and 99.98 percent by six months. Its not uncommon for some to call their very dark black and tans a Bi-color when they are really not, so my advice would be never rely on what the dog has listed on the AKC papers its not uncommon for it to be wrong.

I agree. My boy is a Melanistic B&T and looks Bi-color to most people (way more black than a typical Blanket B&T), and his AKC papers list him as a Bi-color. Either way, it does not matter to me, personally !
