i take your point Joanro, but if one of the greatest german breeders of all time picked out a dog & said that was the greatest dog he has known, i wouldn't need any personal experience with that dog to know it must have been very special, i think it's only a bit of fun to see who people think "the Greatest " are, and to be honest without this question i dont think i would have ever had the pleasure of seeing some of the dogs in these replies, maybe there should be a Hall Of Fame on sites like this, keep your suggestions coming

That's a good point as well, but now you need to define the "greatest breeder of all time". Could just go with the greatest breed judge of all time. You'd probably have a different dog picked.

I have been involved with the GSD breed since 1977. I have competed in the AKC obedience ring obtaining titles on several dogs including a UD. I have titled more than a dozen dogs in Schutzhund including 3 females to SchH3 and took each of them to Nationals [ bred by myself] I have been on 5 world teams with 3 different dogs. I have been to a few Sieger Shows including the 1st in 1990 with a bred by owner female who went ''SG" and  again in 1992. I try to breed survey every dog I  compete with. I have served proudly in UScA Board of Directors and as chairman of the Breed Advisory committee. All of these personal accomplishment bring me closer to an understanding of what a GSD really is all about. I can say without hesitation I know which GSD is the greatest ever. You must listen. It is the dog who finds the next terrorist's bomb. Finding that bomb will save more lives and protect our great country more than any paper title can ever promise to do. The dog who tracks down a felon and apprehends him is important. The dog who finds hidden drugs is important. But the dog who stops the next terrorist threat is the greatest! Everything we do as sport people should help to promote the best working specimens possible. Correct temperment and trainability, proper structure and comformation should be the reason we breed, show, and trial. These endevors should indicate the best breeding partners for real world applications! May the GSD always be a working animal.

well said & True, but sometimes you can't help thinking when you see a special dog in a working event or conformation show, ( i wish that was my dog ), My favourite at the moment of all the dogs i've come across is Kuba Vom Fluchtweg, Take a Look  http://youtu.be/MCJ9EUeew9M

My German Shepherd Tara is the greatest Shepherd of all time.  She loved her family and could just sense when she should stand on guard at the farm. Whenever anyone drove up to the gate we didn't know she seemed to know.  She would bark just to let people know she was there.  I always felt safe with her near me.  I miss her so much.  Now, we have Maya.  Hopefully, she will do the same, but she just loves everybody too much.
