The greatest for me was the first German dog that brought me to go 100% German.   I was at a party and most of the people there were at the Sieger show that year.  There was over a hundred photos of dogs on a table, mainly english dogs, but one stood out for me above the rest and when I said that this was my choice everyone laughed at me and said he was rubbish.  At that point I did not even know the dog's name.  I stuck to it and said that was the way I wanted to go.   It transpired that the dog was Marko v Cellerland the Sieger that year ,1972.  Unusually, his father was a HGH male which I found interesting.

Greatest or most famous? and famous for showing or famous as in world famous?  Strongheart and Rin Tin Tin both have stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 2 out of only 3 dogs to have stars (Lassie being the 3rd).  From what I've been reading recently, those two dogs made German Shepherds the number one breed in America for decades starting in the 20's and 30's.  I'm thankful for that.  I have watched the silent films of the first Rin Tin Tin and I have to say... that was one amazing dog, I couldn't believe he was able to run and jump/climb into a 2nd floor window, no trick photography in those days, I think that was "Where the North Begins".

Interesting info about the winning dogs from your posts,  I love the "rubbish" Sieger winner story, and the story about Colonel.

I noticed apart from Rin Tin Tin, nobody has mentioned the same dog yet, i'm new to GSD's i used to own rottweilers & the reason i asked was if the ADRK came up with a list of the Top 20 dogs of all time, i think i would name at least 15 of them without knowing the list, the GSD world seems a lot more complex haha, taking in consideration the fact there's a show lines, working lines & various Colours, thanks for your replies, i think there should be a list of greatest Working & greatest Show line German shepherds, Perhaps breed clubs should do a poll of it's members

It seems to me that a person could only answer that question honestly by personal experience. Therefore, it would stand to reason that there will be as many different names as people responding. If rankings is what you want, then go to show results and world championships. Rankings have been the ruination of many breeds. Every body wants to use the top dog in rankings, regardless of faults in temperament, etc.

True...I my responce was based on most famous.
Had I answered based on what the post said, "greatest" (silly me) I would answer, my dog Ando v. Tsa-Li would be in my top ten, with Dugan v. Eichenluft 2nd (also my dog).  3rd would be Eagle v. Eichenluft, then Bodo v. Tiekerhook, Kobra v. Eichenluft, Xinerobella v. Tiekerhook, Dina v. Krushaus, and the list goes on through out their pedigrees.  Of course, none of these dogs would be possible with out Horand.  Still to my list would be Fero and Yoschy.
