I have a ten week old puppy that I bred and raised. Today she was found to have a tapeworm. This baffled me as I've never had a young puppy with tapeworms, only adult dogs. I don't think the medicine I use, Panacur, kills tapeworm. What is the best medicine to use for puppies this young? I use Drontal on my adult dogs that get tapeworm...should I also for this puppy? Also, due to the size of the tapeworm, the vet thinks she has had it since two weeks old. Can someone give me some more info on tapes???

Panacur will kill taenia tapes but not all types of tapeworm.  I use Drontal safely on all my pups and kittens.

Tape is easily passed from dog to dog from them just being in the same run or yard.  If you deworm one dog, you should do them all at the same time.

Tapes are from fleas, they are not contagious from one dog to the other.  This parasite needs an intermediate host,  usually the flea. If a dog has a tape, it either has/had fleas or ate something dead that was infested with tapeworm cysts. Drontal is the drug of choice.

Got to correct myself on that.  Tapes actually will come from flea infestation, not feces.  I was thinking of Whipworm which is passed through the soil.

oNE FLEA ON A PUP CAN GIVE THAT PUP WORMS     YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN A FLEA CAN BE BROUGHT IN FROM A NEIGHBOR , ETC...

i USE    SAFEGUARD   TAPEWORMER    ORDERED FROM    www.revivalanimal.com.......

puppies can be give it at the age yours is...direction on package

The other wormer by Farham is  Praziquantel Tablets....for pups over 4 weeks and it kills both tapeworms...

wait two weeks and reworm dog.

keep Frontline plus or Advantage on adult dogs to prevent fleas....if you have multiple dogs   put the preventative on every other dog...dont need it on all dogs...

spray Adams   (  water basedonly) on pups     must say     water based on front of bottle....to ward off an occasional flea until you can put the frontline plus on them

Cats carry fleas badly   dont ask me what to do with the cats....you dont want my answer....lol

TAPES ARE LIKE  PINWORMS   THEY CAN BE CONTAMINATED FROM DOG TO DOG ...DOG LICKS ITS LITTER MATES

BOTTOM WHERE THE TAPE IS LURKING, AND THE PUP SWALLOWS THE PAP....THE PUPS OR DOGS CAN BE REINFESED...

TAPES ARE ONE OF THE ONLY WORMS THAT DO NOT TRAGICALLY DETERIATE THE DOGS HEALTH IMMEDIATELY LIKE THE HOOKWORM AND THE HEARTWORM.

WHIP WORMS DO PASS THRU WILDLIFE OR FECES OF CATTLE, WILD LIFE ON YOUR PROPERTY AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

ROUNDWORM IS LIKE THE PINWORM IN HUMANS AND CAN DO A LOT OF DAMAGE INSIDE A DOG.

Have the vet that diagnosed the puppy give you the proper medication for the tapeworms that way you are sure to obtain the right doseage and more likely to get rid of them with single treatment

Tapes are NOT transmitted from animal to animal, unless the dog ate a flea that jumped off another dog..... they either come from fleas or eating flesh infested with it (rabbit, etc) which is probably not likely

Also, I'm confused by Frontlining every other dog in the house.. how does one decide which is every other one.. i would say treat every dog with Frontline and try to stretch it out.. it is possible to get up to 3 months flea protection per application, as long as there isn't a heavy infestation.... you must have them somewhere though

There are topical products specifically for cats as well

This is suprising to me....it's extremely cold here and I haven't seen a flea in months. Also, three other puppies from the same litter have also been diagnosed with tapeworms. I will get meds for them tomorrow. Thanks for the info. Just wanted to know how they were spread and what was the best way to kill/prevent them.
