We had to reschedule Remmi's appt. to get spayed. She's there now. I hope I can get some recommendations for post surgical activity levels.  Specifically:  1. How many days should she be in the crate? 2. Outside some but on leash? 3. Resume normal activity? 4. Any experience/advice I have missed? 5. Oh, and how long today should I wait before giving her food? Will the effects of anesthesia make her naseous?  The sugery should be done by 11 and we should pick her up around five.

Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert but why not just let her rest and do what she wants in the house? I don't see why a crate would be necessary at all. Pen her up in the kitchen in case she vomits (assuming that no one has carpet in their kitchen), for one day. Outside on a leash at her own pace should be fine. I would give her small amounts of food for the first day or so, but I would not change to something other than her normal food, as she could get diarhea. I am not a vet tech or anything like that but this way has worked for me just fine. Normality will come at its own pace. If I knew what the surgery was for, there might be other recommendations.

Do right it says for a spay job! LOL They tend to be lethargic and sore enough to stay calm for at least a day. I have never needed to crate a spayed female after surgery. Just don't let her run lose as she may take off thinking she feels better in a day or 2 after a cat or something and rip a stitch or 2. Give her a handfull of her regular food and what water she desires tonight and resume regular schedule tomorrow morning if she isn't throwing up. Your vet should send you home with signs to look for and ways to limit activity.

I sure hope you paid the minimal additional fee for pain meds for after her surgery? This made such a big difference in my experience. This is major surgery after all! JMHO and good luck to you, Tirzah

Just a note to say thanks for the advice.  The vet did give me a lot of information after the surgery, too.  I am glad to have crated her this afternoon because she is very restless but seemed "out of it" mentally.  Disoriented and pretty groggy.  And I did get the pain pills.  I asked for Valium for me but they wouldn't go for it.  I've tried to get her to drink but she just isn't interested yet.  They said keep her quiet for a full 14 days. No running, jumping, etc..  That's definately going to be tough to do.

Thanks again,

Dawg
