K9 Cops.... stories

|Here's a feel good one for everyone! Now they do mention a labrador in this article, but in my state, I'm pretty sure shepherds rule. Even our dinky towns seem to have a K9 cop, and the one's I've seen have been GSD's. How about an informal census from members here, of where they live...does your town have a K9 cop? What breeds do they use? Just curious, really. If you have an interesting K9 cop story you want to share, do it here! |

|What a great thread.|
The town my business is located in does not have a K9. However one of the cops told me the following story;
The police had surrounded the area where a man with a gun was hiding. It was like 2 AM, they didn't want to go in until daylight. So one of the officers got on a bullhorn, announcing if the man didn't surrender they were going to let the dog get him, you could hear loud barking in the backround.
The guy threw down his gun and yelled he wanted to surrender. After he was cuffed and being led away he asked where is the dog? He was told we don't have one, that was officer so and so imitating a K9.

TRUE BLUE WARRIOR HERO: PBSO - Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office K-9 DEPUTY "KENZO" SHOT THREE TIMES ... SAVED FELLOW DEPUTIES' LIVES ... AND THEN WALKED OUT OF THE HOSPITAL ON HIS OWN FOUR LEGS ... LESS THAN 24 HOURS LATER! On Monday, an evil man shot and killed his girlfriend. He then took off on foot. Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Richard Burdick, K-9 KENZO, a 9 yoa German Shepherd, and his handler (name not being released at this time), spotted him walking. Kenzo, who has been working for the SO for the last 8 years, placed himself between the armed suspect and his fellow Deputies and then rushed the gunman. The suspect fired several rounds toward the dog. One bullet struck Lt. Burdick in his thigh. Three bullets struck Kenzo. At least one of the Deputies fired back, striking and killing the killer.
The wounded Warriors were transported. Kenzo was critical. Lt. Burdick was treated and released and is now resting at home. Kenzo was shot three times to his chest region. One bullet was a through-and-through. A second bullet was removed and the third, which is too close to a muscle but not in harm's way, was left for now. Through the night and morning, numerous K-9 handlers from several agencies paid visit to Kenzo to show support and gratitude.
Late Tuesday afternoon, Police K-9 Deputy Kenzo walked out of the vet hospital on all fours. He is now resting at home with his handler and family. Much thanks and gratitude goes out to the veterinary staff. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw stated "If he hadn't distracted the guy, maybe more than one of them would've been shot, and maybe not just in the leg. But that's what he's trained to do - apprehend people."
Our heartfelt thoughts are with Lt. Burdick and K-9 Kenzo, his handler and their families, both of blood and of BLUE. Though taking a life is never an easy thing to do, no matter the circumstances, the choice was taken from these Heroes and they did what they were forced to do. Job Well Done True Blue Warriors.
Our thoughts also extend to the family of victim, Deglis Quintana, 37.

A man is in custody, charged in connection with a knife attack at a motel that left three people injured, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to the Carolina Inn and Suites at about 1:45 a.m.
Officers found Chavis Shiron White with a knife wound on his throat. Deputies said they learned that White and Johnny Eunice had gotten into a fight in White’s hotel room. A short time later, as White walked walked through a breezeway, Eunice slashed him in the throat, deputies said.
Two other men, Michael Pick and David Ball, tried to stop Eunice and were also cut.
A deputy with a police dog found Eunice in some nearby woods a short time later.
Deputies said when they tried to document injuries from the K-9 capture, Eunice was combative and spit on a deputy.
When he was put back in the patrol car, Eunice kicked out the back window, according to deputies.
The incident report said one deputy was cut on the eye by the shattered glass and two other deputies were also cut. Deputies said they used additional force and restraints on Eunice to get him under control.
Eunice was treated at the hospital and booked into the jail on charges of attempted murder, assault and battery and malicious damage to county property.

|K9 Lakota survived a Horrible car crash on Oct. 3 2011. K9 Lakota and his Handler Officer Fox were in route to a home invasion when Officer Fox lost control of his car. The car split in half on impact and K9 Lakota was thrown from the car. He suffered 3 broken legs and 3 broken ribs and internal bleeding in 4 parts of his abdomen and chest. The first 24 hours were touch and go if he would live. He underwent a 10 hour+ surgery at UGA small animal vet hospital. Prior reports were unsure if one of his back legs would have to be amputated, but the great doctors were able to save it. He still faces many hours of physical therapy and more surgeries but he is enjoying retirement and living with his family. Lakota served on the police force for 4 years with Officer Fox. Lakota retired with 80 apprehensions, 36 drug arrest,$58,000 in cash, 6 vehicle seizures and property recovery of 56"& 36" flat screen tvs, dvd player, 15 dvds, 3 beers and 350lbs of copper wire.
