Depends on breed I guess.  My mutt wouldn't do a thing other than make friends.  He actually got out, went down the street, and ran into a stranger's house (she has a Dobe) and was chilling out until she called us. My GSDs got out once and it was bad news.  They didn't get out to go after someone (like I said if they tried to eat everyone that walked passed that would be nonstop all day and night), but one of the dogs inadvertently broke the old fence so they both wandered a few houses over to sniff and mark where a neighbor ties out their dog, and there was an alteraction when a neighbor tried to grab a collar.  What NOT to do when you find a strange dog - grab its collar!

We have signs that show a picture of a GSD. I have been hesitant to post any other signs. No, they aren't attractive and more signs=more liability (according to some) or more of the ugly factor.

Even with the signs, we had an idiot lady come, open our CLOSED gate, and walk into the yard with our overly protective female running loose. We were outside, thank God, so our female was behaved ... but if the idiot lady had tried that and for some reason we had not been outside, then I don't know what might have happened. We now padlock out gate even when we are home. That said, I would not put it past an idiot to jump the gate if they wanted to. Because of this, we really don't leave our dogs outside for long. They go out for potty breaks and that's about it. I do have a kennel if any of them need to run and I cannot watch them. That, too, is padlocked.

We even had an issue with two little girls that came onto the property. Our overly friendly male scratched one of the girls. The parents were all over MY butt about THEIR kids and then called animal control on me and I had to show proof of rabies. It's all irritating. Honestly, this is the reason I am very particular about what dogs I choose to keep. Some dogs are just too much of a liability to own, especially if you have annoying neighbors.
