The value of flaxseed in dog food--Omega 3 EFA by HighDesertGSD on 27 September 2011 - 18:40 |
| How efficent are dogs in coverting 18 carbon ALA to 20, 22 Carbon EPA and DHA? I read different stories. For now I tend to believe that young healthy dogs and pups do convert ALA to EPA and DHA and hence the flaxseed is valuable. I feed my young breeding females fish oil with EPA and DHA, however. |

| i'm not sure in dogs. I know in humans it's pretty inefficient, so EPA and DHA is the best route. I drink it out of the bottle, then pour a bit over the dogs food and call it a night :). I don't find much benefit in flaxseed for either of us that we dont' get from some other source. |

| Dogs do NOT need flaxseed/oil. Nope. In fact is an oil/seed that has allergic properties for dogs. Fish oil/salmon oil OK but remember to give your GSD's and other medium/large adults 400 mg Vitamin E along with those oils. |

In humans, the conversion of ALA is inefficient but sufficient for healthy people. That is why flax seed oil can be used as a source of Omega-3 for most people. |

| According to a report a blood doctor here in TYLER TOLD MY daughters inlaws as he had a rare blood diseased caused by a cut from a ferral hog, the Flax seed or oil can be harmful to some people. IT does something to the blood levels not needed by people who have unstable conditions and can cause , if too much is taken , serious results I will find out the real info from the family. BUt daughter and I quit taking it except only once in a blue moon we sprinkle it in meatloaf or on a bowl of Special K flakes. After being told that , I would not give anything but Krill oil or Vit E capsules or FISH OIL Omega 3 capsules./with VIt D if it is in it. YR |
