Also, a little bit of edge doesn't hurt to increase aggression.

Stable dog first, drives a close second.
We must breed for stable GSD's.
Breeding for dog that is hell on the trial field, but cannot be taken into society without fear and aggression is the destruction of the breed.

The breeding of 2 stable GSDs does not always produce stable GSD offspring. Can't say I know anyone who breeds for unstable GSDs.

Even when all the ingredients are present for the correct temperament, a certain amount of effort is required in the handling and raising, in a way that is tailored to fit the individual dog. Just saying, that sometimes it's no fault of the dog that the handler makes no effort or is inflexible in his approach. A lot can be accomplished with a strong bond to the handler, a true gift if you have it.

As an important component of a "stable temperament", clear headedness can be trained for and exercised, and improved while doing so. Everyone enjoys a dog that simply falls into place with your personal handling style, that bonds with you easily. With less challenge, it feels natural, and is more easily mistaken for "genetics". Either way, you can't disregard the importance of "nurture" in nature's works.
