DM , Is there a test the SV endorses or? by Victory on 23 May 2012 - 22:15 |
Hi Fellow GSD lovers and exhibitors, Can any of you give me input as to whether there is a test for Degenerative Myelopathy in GSDs that the SV endorses? Or not? If so, or if there is one that is used widely but not endorsed, could you give me information, such as the testing University, or company, and it's degree of accuracy and long term studies to support findings? We are, in the US amidst a bit or controversy surrounding a DM test now being used for GSDs by the University of Missouri and the OFA. There seem to be some serious or concerning issues regarding accuracy, predicatability of inheritance, or even clinical signs, as well as length and type of studies , long term and generationallly. I am only fact finding here. I am NOT trying to start a war, so please take it easy on me. As a fellow breeder, exhibitor, and fancier, who loves ALL GSDS..I feel I need more information, from as many sources as possible. Since the SV is the LARGEST single-breed club in the world, I think that is a great place to start! Thank you so much, Kathy

I'm not sure the SV even acknowledges that DM exists in the breed, let alone endorses a test for it. If you're looking to test your own dog to gauge the potential of him/her developing the condition, IMO I'd cover all your bases, and use any and every test you can find--there's a lab in Finland that can test for the risk of perianal fistulas off the same sample you send them for DM, and the results are also accepted by OFA. I figure it can't hurt to have results from various types of testing...and by using more than one test, we can help field validate (or disprove) the various tests, too.

No there isn't. DM tests are not common in Germany. DM test results can only give recommendations and are not proof that a dog is effected by it or not.

Maybe not a saliva test but I have seen some that advertise HD/ED scores along with spine has been x-rayred clear?? So can I presume they mean for DM or is that just for other issues or maybe if they are injured in the future? Thx Nan PS: This is one reason I have steered away from buying from Germany. Could not go thru that disease again with another dog. Thx Nan

Spine x-ray probably looking for spondylosis (degenerative osteoarthritis.)

DM can't be diagnosed with an xray.

When I looked, I wasn't able to find ANY test specifically designed for GSD's.
