I have two Shepherds now; One is almost a year and a half; She is doing well with the training I've done with her; Even walked her past about 50 screaming kids(we live beside a school) that were on the playground, she did great; She has good drives, very social, and I can pretty much take her anywhere and she is very obedient. The other Shepherd right now is about 4 and a half months. Vet visits he has been confident, loves the people, sits calmly(without me even asking) to be pet by them, lets them handle him perfectly fine; He's good in any store we go to, good with children, and I even took him with me to see my family out of town last week and he did great there. New environments never seem to phase him; Very, very high drive and progressing well with the bite pillow, nice full, calm grips, and it is like the world disappears when you do work like that. The barking however, from the pup is not in relation to any of those places. I don't get barking reactions in stores or the vet. But, he barks when people are near or approaching the vehicle, and he barks when he sees certain people(it tends to be more so men, not so much women or children; But he is not afraid of men that he meets at all) on our walks in the neighborhood. I suspect part of this is because he is a pup; But the car is territorial behavior, and when it happens on leash on our walks I work him in commands(though I've not used his drives in those situations) and focus work. What are your guys thoughts on barking (in the car; And on walks while on leash) in those two instances? What would you do in those situations? (Especially in the vehicle)

Sorry Guy - mine never bark in the car. Must just be something about my relationship with them; and things like how used to car travel they are, how much they can see out to notice other dogs we pass by, etc. Even when carrying multiple dogs in the work van, I rarely got a peep out of any of them. Maybe they mind-read that I just won't tolerate it ?

USED to be that if my old van was parked up anywhere with Vida still in it, she used to get all 'guardy' and shout at anyone who laid hand on the vehicle; but she never used to bark while travelling, or if I was with her in (or around) the van.

Taz OTOH would simply look lovingly at a car thief !

Sheila hasn't barked while in my current car at all, yet - and although because of her advanced age I have not taken her out on the  roads so much, I have had her over a year now...

Hey Hundmutter, thanks for the reply. Thankfully it's only one who does. The older one doesn't at all. She's watchful of those who approach the vehicle or who are near, but she's not barking. Both her and the pup ride in the car on a regular basis with me.

I took the young one to Tractor Supply today. Though he's not as reactive in stores or places like that, we were outside some. And there were numerous people within the vicinity of my vehicle as well. I took him in and would walk him around some, and then we would play with his tug toy at certain points. When I let him have the tug toy he would literally just carry it around with a full, calm grip, very proud and very sure of himself. Had conversations with numerous people and would command him to sit while I was talking to some of them. Only one time there did I really think he was going to bark at someone that he saw from a distance. But .... the person looked suspicious to me as well. He didn't bark, just showed a natural suspicion. Throughout everything he seemed confident and ready to do anything. I intend to take him later this week to the "square" and work him there. There are tons of people constantly around there all the time.

Keep on doing what you are doing & he may grow out of being noisy in the car. To my mind, the worst thing you could do is draw attention to it if he does bark, as that may reinforce him thinking its okay. Good luck.
