| Yes, the positioning of the pelvic x-ray could be better. Both elbows appear normal. I'd lay my money on an OFA "good" for the hips. |

I think she deserves a good but I think OFA will say Fair. I hope good/ Depends on who gets the first look.I like to see the knees present and rotated in with legs pulled straight. Your positioning is not the best.See pic. Elbows look good but I would like to see a bigger picture.

hips should be tighter in the sockets to be good - there is too much laxity for a 2 year old and will go fair at best IMO.

| I would have asked for a better x-ray. Wass the dog sedated? If so, no excuse for the poor positioning and exposure. I'm no expert on reading hips, trying to learn myself but I would not have accepted this x-ray. |

I think OFA will send the xrays back if they can't see the knees. Not sure on that.
I don't like the look of the left-hand ball--it doesn't look smooth and round. In examining the original, I wonder if any calcification or micro-fractures are visible? The other thing I look at is the shadow of the hip behind the ball joint, showing depth of coverage. From the image here, I can't see that coverage well enough to see how good it is. Sometimes, that coverage line will be actually concave, indicating very shallow joint coverage.
Basically, I don't see signs of any real hip problems here, but there may be indications that are visible on the actual x-ray that may cause a less than "good" rating or a request for re-xraying.

Well the results are in and not good news.
elbows=normal
hips= mild hip dysplasia
radiographic findings=subluxation
unilateral pathology=right

as molly said, positioning could be better. the knees don't show so one can't tell how much or little the left is rotated. you might want to try again and see if it makes a difference. true that the left socket is not as well formed as the right, being more shallow or flat. i would not be willing to accept the dysplastic rating, though, without trying again.
it seems as though every xray that is posted here gets comments on the positioning and very very seldom does anyone say that it is correct or excellent. this is a problem. maybe there needs to be a registry for the vets doing the xrays. if they can't do it correctly they shouldn't be permitted to take the xrays or send them in to ofa. obviously, just because they have a license doesnot guarantee anything. maybe there is something like this already in place-------correct me if i am wrong.

I'm getting really irritated with the OFA lately. No wonder there are many breeders out there who don't hesitate to breed non-OFA'd dogs that they can tell are not dysplastic by their x-rays. SO much can vary depending on positioning! I have not been fortunate enough to find a vet yet that will do good positioning 100% of the time, and I've been to an ortho specialist and a radiologist that used to read for the OFA... both charging well over $200 and WILL NOT let you see the x-rays while the dog is still under. (I'm also one of those people who look at the positioning and don't have an eye for what is off until I study them extensively at home, so it likely wouldn't matter if I did get to.) I cannot afford to redo x-rays because the radiologists at the OFA can't read them correctly if they aren't positioned perfectly. They need to start sending back any and ALL x-rays that are not perfectly positioned and MAKE the vets take them correctly if that is the case. I feel hips can fluctuate one level depending on positioning. Inconsistant and unreliable. Can't help but wonder if the OFA purposely raised the bar and now requires the socket cover the head by say 75%??
Zigzag - I can't quite see the depth of the socket on the left side of the image, but it looks like it would cover the head at least 50%. There is some noticable laxity, so I would not expect anything better than a Fair, but I certainly don't agree with Mild. From experience I can tell you it's hard to get out of the Mild rut... it seems once a dog has a grade the OFA is very reluctant to change it. The semi-retired former OFA radiologist that I've gone to a couple of times told me that when you resubmit x-rays for your dog, the new and old films are sent to 3 radiologists who read it and grade it, if it's different than the original grade ( they think it should get fair, but it got mild before), then both films gets send to 3 more as a tie-breaker. So they still get to see the original and however bad it made the hips look. Best of luck, and I'm sorry your dog didn't pass. |

the right hip (shown on the left) seems to be the issue with this dog.........
my Sita has a left hip that on her prelims looked very much like this.
the specialist said that there is supposed to be a parallel line where the ball meats the socket and the ball should be smooth and round and the ball should be at least 50% inside the socket.
good news is that Sita is getting on 2 years and she shows no signs of HD, and may never.
