At what age can someone tell if a puppy will be regular coat or coated?

As soon as 8 weeks. or even earlier depends on weather you have a good eye or not ;)

Pretty eary most of the time. Many will also have a very distinct face/head and eyes, almost monkey like. How old are they now? Would love to see pics! :-) Theresa

We can usually tell by 2 weeks of age......they just "look" different.....kinda "terrier looking in the face"...thats the easiest way for me to explain.
Take some clear close ups of their faces and post the pics.......we can help better that way.

2 weeks usually if you are experienced and have seen them before and familiar with the look...

Mahon and I got into a betting match on one litter of Dressa's pups...Many of  my pups are very heavy fuzzy and lots of neck hair and heavy all over till  3 -4 months old but no tuffs in  ear and no long nose faces....The one pup he had ended up not long coat but coated...I lost my bet and I usually can tell from very early...so even sometimes you do  have to wait till  8 -10 weeks ...but not a long coat..you can tell them very soon.

With my puppies I can usually tell at 2 weeks, definitely by 3 weeks, but on this board I have seen a couple of photos in other threads that left me unsure! However the puppy posted here is definitely not a long coat, no question.

I've noticed a distinguishing characteristic that is present essentially from birth and I have only ever seen it with coats.  It's hard to describe but the fur on the bottoms (backs) of the forearms of coats sees to have a pattern...looks sort of like a part...that I have not seen on pups with standard coats.

Here is a pic of a 5 week long coat. Notice the brissles of hair on the muzzle and the wavey hair on the ears.
This is the puppy Yellowrose was sure was not going to be a longcoat. The muzzles also appear to be more pie shaped then the non coats when looking straight on at the tip of the nose.
