Hello folks.  I'm new to Mali's and would like to learn more about the breed.  I've seen reference to black Mali's and Dutchies on the web and I've never heard of such a thing.  The few dogs like this that I've seen could be light boned GSD's but of course I cannot be certain.

Is there such a thing as a 100% black Mali or Dutchie?  Dark pigment, yup, but solid jet black???

Thanks!

Yvette

I think there is some confusion with how we in the states breed and how the Dutch breed. Dutch puppies are often given to the breed they most closely resemble. Many in the NL breed to compete and are not as worried about blood line purity as we tend to be. They are going off the drives and scores of the parents.  If you go to some of the KNPV websites you will see many black mals but in their pedigree they are listed as "reu" or red but has (zwarte) black listed with it. There are breeders that only breed for blacks.

I have a solid black Malinois that came from the same litter with black and tan standard colored Malinois.  His parents both came from Holland.  In all ways he is the same as the black and tan except for color.  He is an exceptional family dog and dotes on my grandson. He will sit guard for hours at a pasture of sheep and goats and guards horses from coyotes.  He is a bit stubborn and not easy to train because he seems to know what his job is and he wants to do it.  He is 7 years old and has developed one of the Malinois health problems ... epilepsy.  Blacks may not be recognized in the US Kennel club, but they do exist and they are beautiful and great dogs.  People often mistake him for a Black German Shepherd but he looks nothing like a German Shepherd.  He has the square body of the Malinois, not the sweeping hind quarters of the German Shepherd.  If anyone wants to see a photo, let me know.

Belgain and Dutch History, where black comes from

Yes to black Malinois and Dutch Shepherds.  Here is some history for people new to the Belgian world, especially in the US.  Originally all belgians and dutch shepherds were one breed with 3 catagories (rough, long and smooth coat).  Then they went for breed recognition and started to diversify and interbreed less.  You can actually find fawn dutches in the earliest of studbooks.  Then the belgians split even more as colour became a concern, not just coat type, although in some countries like here in Canada they are still all considered the same breed.  So technically you could breed a Malinois to a Laeken (which many do to strengthen the Laekenois lines)...  So of course black Malinois and Dutchies will pop up and can be completely legit and have no cross breeding in the history what so ever as all the belgian varieties and dutches used to be the same breed so therefore they all have those colours in their background somewhere just like you will occationally get a white German shepherd out of a black and tan or sable line because one of the original founders of the German Shepherd dog was white.  Not only that but some will breed a Malinois to a Groendale as in certain countries they are still the same breed so this is also legit and it is labled either Groen, Terv or Mal depending on coat colour and type.  The dutch you will notice also have the three coat varieties (curly, long and short) although you mainly see the short...this is from that original history.  You also can find grey brindle Laekens although getting more and more rare, which is again from this history.
