How would compare the Malonis to GSD? I am into Schutzhund I have been hearing that Malonis are better working dog than GSDs. I know that dogs are individuals like humans but comparing the top dogs of both breeds how would you compare them. I know the looks difference (GSD bigger but Mals are more nimble etc...) but how else would you compare them.

Thanks in advance for you opinions and information.

Simply, if it  is agood working dog I would not try to compare theGSD with Malinois. The rest is preference. You may consider the size of the dog.

Malinois are more instinctively reactive. They will just react faster than a GSD IMO. A GSD will sometimes think first and then react. Sometimes a GSD will check with the handler before reacting to a threat but a Mal wont. There are exceptions of course. Sometimes it is hard to explain the difference and you really have to experience it.

For me, I use malinois because they are more agile and more hardy dogs.  They don't eat too much, and are less prone to different diseases.  Where I live (Philippines), mals are much more adated, since they have shorter coats and tire less easily even if the climate reaches warm levels, compared to the GSDs I've seen.  I'm not into sports, much more for reality training.  For personal protection, I think mals are more aggressive and are more high-wired.  Again, yes, there are exceptions, and you have to look at the individual dogs.  I'm talking about generalizations.

The best way to know is to have the opportunity to see multiple GSD's in a working environment and also see multiple Mal's in a working environment.  But without that opportunity it is hard to distinguish the two breeds using generalities such as drive, temperment, ability, etc.  Each individual dog in both breeds will have different levels of each and there lies some overlapping of qualities for the two breeds.

But with that said, generally mal's tend to be higher in drive, display higher energy levels, more agile.  And believe or not I own and train a GSD in Schutzhund.  In simple terms that display alot of working energy that must be directed to some outlet (working or sport).  "If you don't give the dog something constructive to do, it will find something destructive to do."

My personal opinion based on what the dogs were bred to do is that Mal's are generally found and perform well in Ring sports and can have some difficulty with the very structured schutzhund sport.  But this is not a completely fair or absolute statement.

I would avoid terms such as aggression, hardness, sharpness, edgy, nerves, etc. when comparing.  I've seen all these traits, either good or bad in both breeds.

I loved your post!  How true!

"Mal's are generally found and perform well in Ring sports and can have some difficulty with the very structured schutzhund sport."

I agree again....But having trained in MR, FR, KNPV, ScH for a number of years...I think the Mals aside from being drivey...also learn a new concept very quickly...And Sch is about pattern training....simply put....a Mal gets bored.  This is a Breed, that not only needs to be challenged physically, but also mentally.  Good or bad (depending on whom you talk to); it is what it is.

I love them both and would hate to be on the receiving end of either.  They each have their strong points and weaknesses and can fluctuate on those depending on their temperament and how the handler's personality meshes with them.

The Mal does stand out in agility and quickness.  I think they tend to last longer in the heat and recover quicker too.

With that said, why not be greedy and own both?

german shepherds are better than mal's, because 75% globally, GSD use by the police, military etc. versatality is what GSD's specialty....

Mals run faster on a race track, huge time difference on the 660 every time I notice. Mals are quick and stay quick long time.  LOL
But I dunno, I like them both.  :o)~

100% Malinois or Dutch shepherd. I love German Shepherd dogs but the Mal or dutchie is faster jumps higher hits with more force and can be out on the streets alot quicker. Also a Mal/Dutch seems to retain more in training probably cause you can get more training done with a mal in a day than a GSD Also finding good GSD's can be expensive you pay by the knose when you can pick up a Mal and not know anything about the lineage and still come up with a great dog.

Hi
I am not English or American so sorry about my gramma.
I had few experience with mali and a lot with GSD to be onest I prefer more GSDs because they are not that crazy..GSD are much better in retrievering..they have great focus on toy, even when it is not moving. And next thing is that you much harder find good mali than GSD.mali from 100 you wll find 1 ,gsd from 100-33..but thing  will be beter   malinoa than 33 gsd?
