Hi All,

Here are a couple of new pics of Oakley...Let's see if they load this time...Tried to post them yesterday, but the internet was painfully slow.

They loaded!!  The one above is one I took a week or so ago...Oakley is standing about four feet above the ground where she is.  She got up there by herself, and down again. (There are no nails she could get hurt on, and the ground is level around the "obstacle" of the board pile, so don't get alarmed.  I encourage her to explore and try new things like that...It's done wonders for her confidence.)   Her confidence is incredible...She is in no way handicapped by her blindness.  What a dog!

And this one I am in the process of enhancing for framing...I think I'm going to put this one on my wall.  I love this one maybe more than any of the others I've every taken.

I was off the internet for the last ten days...I went over the month allowance on this aircard thing and didn't dare go any further over.  So I had to wait to post the pics and updates...I'm sorry!

Thanks!  She is really growing up...Seven months old yesterday!  She probably weighs a bit over fifty pounds right now...I'm not sure, but she's around twenty two or three inches at the withers...Not huge, but not small, either.

She's just a really sweet dog.

Thanks for the fix!  I was needing that.  She is soooo gorgeous.  I really like the one of her "exploring".  It says alot about the job you are doing with her.  Keep it up!

Here's a non-Oakie picture, but I thought you all might enjoy it too.  I took it while I was back with my Dad, in a place called the Scott County Park in Iowa.

This picture is currently on my desktop...I think it turned out very well.  I've got a new program that lets me edit photos, and I think I'll cut Oakley out of one of them and put her in this one...It would be perfect!  I don't know how to do that, but I'll figure it out.

Aside from that, this was a very pretty setting.  Late September...

She is such a joy, she has brought us all some simple pleasure just watching her grow up into a big girl... This little blind pup has touched us all.

Thanks, all of you.  Yes, she's got courage.  If something startles her, she investigates it, rather than shivering in terror.  I've always helped her to face the unknowns of life, because I didn't want her to be frightened.  I never give attention when she's acting uncertain, but I always praise her for checking things out and doing things.  It's been an amazing few months, watching her grow and mature.

The funny thing is that when most people see her, they don't think she's blind at all.  When she meets new people, she's friendly, but aloof, until she's checked them out.  She still gets just a little pushy with the kids, nose in the face and all that, but I've been working with them to correct her the same way I do, and she's getting better at respecting their space.  She's just easy to deal with most of the time.

The only time Oakley get a bit funny about things is if another dog comes up and surprises her by barking at her, especially if it growls, like when we're out for a walk..  She backs away, barking and carrying on, but not really in fear.  It's more a bit of uncertainty, because as soon as the other dog settles down, so does she.  But since she can't see the threat, she barks at it.

Thanks again, all of you, and I'll add some more pictures as I can.

Crys

Thanks for the kind words, Bob...She's touched a lot of people's hearts, and for that, for the fact that she is alive today and happy, I thank God.

I am truly touched by this!! I think you have done a tremendous job with her. I also agree with you not babying her in new situations. Are you familiar with Cesar Millan , The dog whisperer ? I think he would agree with the way you are handling her. She really is a looker!! Continued sucess and happiness.

Thanks again, for all of the kind words from everyone.

Peanut, I am very familiar with Cesar Millan and his approach to dogs, which is what I am using.  It's working well.  She's adjusted to everything I have asked of her.  I couldn't be happier with how she's doing, although I do wish I had a little more time to work on formal obedience, but that will come in time.  She picks up what I ask of her pretty fast, and the stays are the most important, I think, which she's pretty good at.

You have done such a wonderful job with her! She is turning into a beautiful dog. She does seem very confident, happy and well loved. The foot bridge photo is gorgeous. I want to hang it over my fireplace LOL.... I can imagine it with a little Kinkade-style cabin in the backgound, softly glowing and peaceful *sigh* I want to live there :-) Nice pictures, thanks for sharing

You are truly a good person to take care of this gal.  You have restored a little of my faith in humans.  The world needs more like you.  With all the dogs I see being peddled just on this website alone, you can only pray they end up with a good person like you.  Keep her and your other animals safe and loved.

Here's another picture for you...

Tomorrow I'll post another one I took at the same time, with her mouth not open, but this one is too precious!  Also, it give you an idea of how big she's ended up to be.  She's not huge, but she's not small, either.  Just right for me, I think.  She's really something.

Lastly, Can you guess what time it is, by her actions?

Thanks again, everyone...Domenic, Bazza, Red Sable, Maggie, DebiSue...Your kind words are a wonderful way to improve an otherwise gloomy day.

Oakley is one special dog, that much I can say!  As for me being a great person...Well, I don't know about that!  My mother in law seems to think these days that I'm about the lowest form of slime to ooze across the face of the earth, so some day, I really wonder if she can be that wrong.

Aside from that, I'm glad to have Oakley in my life.

Domenic, here's the first pic I ever saw of Oakley, one that Steph posted on this site and on her site...

And here is Oakley the day I met her...

This was on the ride home that day...

From there to this...

And in a few short months, she's become what you see now, in the pictures above.  The links provided by MaggieMae above show you some of the original pictures I took...I posted tons of them on several different threads.  If you search for   She was one of twelve puppies, bred because someone had a bitch and wanted puppies to sell.  The mother wasn't even registered, let alone OFA or any of the other stuff, and when the people took this pup, I guess in pity, she wouldn't eat.  They took her to the vet, who diagnosed her as blind, recommending that she be returned to the breeder, who said they didn't want her and would put her down.

She ended up with Steph, thank God, and I saw her story.  Something about this pup was extremely special, just from what I knew, and for some reason, Steph chose me to adopt her.  I love this dog very much, so I didn't coddle her.  I wanted her to be confident, outgoing, willing to try things and do things without being clingy.  She wants to be where I am, but not so strongly that she panics if separated from me.  She will lie quietly in her crate or in the utility room, living room, whatever, with a door closed, separated from me.  But when I'm back with her, or when I first get up in the morning, she's vocal, communicating her pleasure at me coming back to her, being there with her.  It's been incredible, this trip through puppyhood with this dog, watching her do the exact same things a sighted dog can do, with no limitations.  Of course, I have to watch out for her, because I can see the dangers that the world presents, but she's very aware of her surroundings, which makes it a lot easier.

I just bumped the original thread back to the top so Domenic can read it.

Thank you Crys, what a sweety this pup is.Cant help but liking her even though I have never met her.She sounds like a brave little girly.By the way,DONT let your mother in law rent space in your head.Sometimes they have a way  of just being like that without even realizing the harm being done.I'll say it again,It takes a special kind of person to do an animal such a kind act. You're a great person and dont forget it.

Here's the photo I was going post "tomorrow" that I didn't get a chance to get posted...My apologies.

I had to place her back in the sit so I could take this...But she did really well when I told her to stay...

Then there's this one, and I apologize for the edit, but I wanted to post a pic of her with one of my kids, sans face, so I replaced the face, for her safety...

This pic was absolutely darling, still is, even with the flower face.  Due to events a while back...Couldn't post it the way it was.  So anyway, Oakley's pretty darn good with the kids, too!

WOW Crys, she really has turned into a beauty.

Just to clarify some things, after reading the original post I put on, from above references;

A couple of vets told the gal that the pup should be put down. So my first response was probably PTS, but take her in and see for myself. I could have just not taken her and let them deal with it....once I actually picked her up and saw there was no problem with her. I was able to make the correct decision. I found out she wasn't as bad off as they made it sound. You never know till one gets the dog or pup in hand....so....that is why she is with Crys now...
I am glad Crys and Debie Sue came along when they did, otherwise she would have been another  fixture in my house...she has a way about her that does get under your skin...DebiSue, sorry you didn't get her but your hubby definately would have skun me alive...,

Anyhow...I am so happy to see that she is doing well...Crys has indeed done a great job with her and I am glad it worked out as it did...I do my best in matching the dog with the right family. This one has proved that I didn't srew up....lol...
Take care everyone, Steph

Thanks Steph.

It means a lot that you're happy with how she's turned out, and I sure am, too.  She's a great dog, well adjusted.

My hubby likes to tease her sometimes, touch her whiskers first on one side and then the other, then switch off, but she loves it, jumps on him (He knows she shouldn't do that, too...But he asks for it), and she loves it.  The only thing that really seems to bother her nowadays is if we're walking and a strange dog starts barking and growling at her.  She's not able to see it, so she gets a little keyed up, but no headlong panic or attack mode stuff, just barking back and retreating a bit, which is probably for the best.  I'm glad she's not a fighter...That could be challenging with a blind dog, to deal with unpredictable aggression.

Thank Goodness she's not that way!

Crys
