I have heard that shaving a husky or mal in the summer is more harmful than good, that shaving can lead to permanent coat damage and that the mal's undercoat is designed to allow for protection from the sun and proper air circulation without any more interferance than a daily brushing to get rid of loose fur. I'm still not convinced of how true or false this is. I remember my family shaving the husky we had growing up and she seemed very grateful. Any opinions on this?

It is true you should NOT shave an Alaskan Malamute.  The guard coat shields him from sun, rain, snow, etc. while the undercoat insulates and keeps him warm.  During the summer months, owners simply need to remove the undercoat while leaving the guard coat.

Thank you Greg. Another myth I wonder about is are these dogs actually oderless in comparison to other breeds?
