@ 1Ruger1

Tell the butcher none to start off with. Add organ later. Trust me on this one! If you must, have him add a little liver and kidney. Too much organ meat especially when starting out can cause diarrhea.

Organ meats are the secreting organs like liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, sweetbreads. You also want to feed brain, testicles, all the gross stuff.

The general rule is 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% organ with HALF of the organ meat being liver. It's a very general rule. Some dogs can handle more organ, some need more or less bone. Fruits, veggies, yogurt, things like that are more or less garnish. No grapes, no onions ever!

This may be a stupid question, but in Germany there are Slaughter houses in almost every big city, and there are butchers everywhere.
It's no problem to get fresh green tripe.
Sometimes you need to order it, but that's just a phone call.
You don't even need a freezer, a fridge is fine.
In case you don't own either, it's even possible to hang up the tripe (I used a net, so flees had no access).
No good idea during summer though...

For me your problems are amazing, because the States as a whole % wise do raise way more cattle than Germany, hunting in your country is no major problem, and there are way more farmers?

You can also have butcher grind organ meats and keep them separate from chicken or whatever other meats you have, then just add liver, kidney, heart, (I use chicken liver seldom) usually used beef organs but all can be used and bag up and freeze separate and add as much or as little as you want to each feeding. You don't even needs fruits/vegi's at all is you don't want you can also use oats right out of box if you want. As little or as much as you want. A 100 lbs adult dog would probably eats 2% of his/her both weight so that would be 2 lbs per day each dog and that would be moderate exercise. You have to experiment a bit with each dog about how much each day will maintain their weights as well as good stool and consistency of stool and energy levels etc.  I also had great luck with pork necks, you can grind them if butcher will;  beef necks a bit harder but also ok to grind if you can, their good bone to meat ratio if you need to add more bone to diet, you can play with it a bit for your guy.

How's Prince?  Good luck with all this feed and NuVet might also be the vitamin of choice for now.  Nan

@ Susie

It's a very good question! All I can say is things in America can be stupid. So much depends on where you live in the US. Not even all the big cities will have good "real" butchers. There's a lot of smaller slaughterhouses and some really big ones but none are in cities. No one here wants that in their back yard. Slaughterhouses are SO regulated here already and then animal activists cause all kinds of problems too. Slaughterhouses are regulated on what's fit as food for human consumption, animal feed and must be basically thrown away.

Meat sold for animal feed is supposed to be clearly marked and labeled as not for human consumption. Marking can also be denaturing. That's where they add stuff to the meat to "mark" it very obviously or make it taste differently. The denaturant can be anything from ground up charcoal (makes meat grey or black) to green dyes or bone at specific sized grinds. The regulations on all this are mind boggling and who is supposed to be controlling what is just as confusing!

Green tripe is on the list of things that can't be sold in any way as human food. Some places won't even sell it at all because they don't want to take a chance on screwing up and getting fined or even worse shut down. I have a small local slaughterhouse and butcher. They will not sell tripe, lungs, brain, esophagus or any organ meat except liver and kidney. They will not give it to me even if I buy a whole cow. They return nothing but meat from game animals they process. They say it's due to regulations and the risk of disease or contamination to humans. I have another small butcher that can and will order heart by the case and I get 2 cases at the time.

I drive all my hunter friends crazy each season but I can't get enough meat to last a year and no way to store that much. I can keep about 250 pounds at a time in the dog food only freezer. Small farmers are great! I take advantage of those and I've been known to drive 100 miles to the 4H shows. The problem with small farmers is getting consistent supply. 4H shows turned out to be an expensive dog food trip in comparison to closer sources. I still had the problem of an animal or few to slaughter and butcher. I just can't do that.

OMG, if I tried to hang up a tripe around here someone would be calling the police over the smell! LOL!

MY guy would not touch tripe; he even looks funny at me over canned pumpkin as if to say "so does this mean I am sick"?? too funny though. That stuff is well I can't think of anything that smells worse.

I would a use  spoon full of canned and a cloths pin on your nose.

by Kaylee on 08 November 2018 - 00:11

LOL @ Nans! SO TRUE!!

The first time I opened a can of tripe I grabbed the trash can and thought I'd die from puking. The ground tripe is almost as horrible. I make the stupid mistake of trying to thaw a rock hard tub of it in the microwave on "defrost". I had to throw away the microwave and air out the house for days!

I use partially thawed 2 pound slabs now and cut it into big chunks for an outside treat a few times a week. I think partially frozen contains the smell just enough I can handle it.

I don't get the "am I sick?" look but fish gets spit out and I get the "I can't believe you're trying to poison me with this nasty stuff" look!

Well I used to give my boy pumpkin if he had loose stool OR just for a healthy treat on top of his kibble or just because it is healthy, squash or pumpkin; helps to firm stools.

@ Nans gsd Your poor boy LOL! No wonder he gives you that look. Thanks for the reminder about pumpkin. Regular Smile  I'll have to pick some up to keep on hand.
