Well the Americans on here are not rushing at you to help, Victoria, so I will try !

Have you had any X rays taken at your Veterinarian yet ? If not, that would be the place to start.
People seem to do prelims around 6 - 10 months of age; the Vet should be able to tell you about the OFA submission process, both for preliminary and actual certification of older dogs, I think;
but then, I am in the UK and we don't use the OFA. You could telephone OFA or access the website, to ask, depending at how far on you are at this stage.

Radiographically, positioning of the dog is very important. Unless you have already seen information about that, if you site search PDB you will find plenty of information about the actual X ray process.

What to help smart english ? Just ask your vet. and he'll tell you what to do ?

How simple is that ?

OFA does not issue preliminary h/e ratings till at least 12 months old.

Ask your vet if they even know how to do OFA exrays. Not all vets do this service.

Shatterhand - if that ambiguous remark is somehow sardonically directed at me, I bow to greater knowledge of American posters as to how uselessful your vets might be ! Here in the UK, most of ours understand at least the basics of the process of how to send in films to the KC/BVA HD scoring scheme, as they keep the necessary forms.  Whether they are practised @ taking HD Xrays or not.  This OP had gone completely unanswered for 2 days; don't even know if s/he is still around to read this. S/he may have already asked their Vet and not got help there either.

If its the OP's written english you are getting jiggy about, then I hope they treat your post as helpful, but it does not really address the problem much, does it ?

Hundmutter .You are the one to attack the Americans, not me. what do you know how this work in USA ? Your advice is useless and irrelevent. Do you think English are better than the Americans, than you are dead wrong.

Shatterhand you are way out of line.  Stop now

Nowhere did Hundmutter attack Americans or anything else you claim.

Actually, OFA will issue a preliminary opinion on pups as young as 4 months of age--they just won't publish the prelim results for any dog under 12 months of age. To the OP, you can find the information you're seeking on the OFA website.

by joanro on 02 May 2018 - 01:05

Right, hexi, they only issue an evaluation, not certified.

by hexe on 02 May 2018 - 03:05

Yep, joanro, OFA won't certify hip or elbow results on any dog that's under 24 months of age.

In addition, prelims are only read by one OFA in-house radiologist, so the assessment is only the opinion of a single person. In contrast, films from dogs 24 months old and up are evaluated by three randomly-selected independent board-certified veterinary radiologists who are members of a pool of boarded radiologists who are either in private practice or in teaching/research positions, and the final certified rating is the sum of the three opinions.
