valk well said. Today sport people cannot justify in any other way what the Schutzhund became except comparing it to stand alone a sport like basketball. The fact is that such attitude is leading to degeneration of what Schutzhund and subsequently of the breed and what it used to be and ought to be. I really do not understand why people like Susie is defending degeneration of Schutzhund by comparing it to basket ball.(!!!)

Here I quote from article on Leerburg website:

This year (1999) is the 100th anniversary of the SV. It is also the last time the German Police will hold police dog championships at the same time and place as the SV Bundessieger (Schutzhund championships). This is a break from tradition and not an insignificant fact. It is, in effect, confirmation of the on going decline of the working ability of the German Shepherd Dog. For years the German Police have been telling the SV that it has gotten harder and harder to find suitable German Shepherds for police service work. You can find a reprint of an article to this effect from a German newspaper on my web site. For all intents and purposes these complaints have fallen on deaf ears. While the SV has admitted the problem, they have virtually done nothing about it. That simple fact has lead to this split between the German Police and the SV. I love GSD breed this BS pains me. Politics and PC sh1t destroying the beloved, noble, brave breed which once was THE ultimate GSD. The SV is a gatekeeper of the breed and it has done a poor job. it is DESTROYING IT  and turning a working dog into a toy. Yes, Susie is right. IPO is a sport is not for police - anymore.

Hans, simple fact is that ideal sport/familydog and policedog, require different basics, and since it is impossible to walk a street in two directions at the same time, we are where we are now

but also must say that german police has different view on policedogs than many other countries, I have had germans hear for three weeks in a row testing and buying, and its different quality for lower price than rest of the world will pay for policedogs, not for nothing are german police and bundeswehr short on dogs all the time, as they cannot find it in malinois as well Wink Smile

Duke-
What are the German police looking for that is different?

by duke1965 on 29 November 2018 - 21:11

preydogs, full calm grip as in sport, pressure the dog(generally with plastic jerrycan with rocks) mostly after the dog is on the bite, might see if I can find some vids of that testing/type of dog, most dogs we sell to germany for "diensthund" I sell tu USA for single purpose detection

Would be interesting if you can post those vids.

I know the german police pretty well...and they are very aware of keeping their public image, and of keeping their dog‘s public image, from being too extreme and militaristic...yet are very professional and understated... without much „showy-police flashy-ness“.
