I am pretty sure not all Mals are crazy 😎

Things like this happen when rules are made by people who don't know ( like the so called "dangerous dogs" lists ).

Siberian huskies are much more likely to escape or destroy a crate, but they're not on the list.

And Pastor Niemoller was absolutely right, His other writings are also very good and worth reading.

GSCat: Thumbs Up

Very been on airplanes with humans (mostly drunk) who were worse than any Malis. Just a thought, but what about muzzles? Not a good thing, but for short flights?

Also, I'm looking for a good trainer in the PHX area. How do I contact the one above?

The poem is great. Maybe we should remind us Americans that it can happen anywhere.....starting with Malis on United!!!

I think this is less a breed specific ban on the part of United and more a step to all but totally eliminate its transport of dogs. United's record on safe transport of dogs wasn't great and has taken a couple of more hits this year.
German Shepherds are not specifically banned, yet United's rules require a 700 crate for most adult GSDs. The catch, United no longer allows 700 size crates. Dogs with strong jaws? What dog doesn't have strong jaws? United doesn't want to transport dogs.

No, but United is apparently still trying to 'have its cake and eat it', since it keeps taking money from customers who DO want to transport dogs. If your breed of dog isn't on their list (THIS week), and fits a smaller than 700 size crate, you can still keep paying them to fly it somewhere ...
Dishonest, despicable, unreasonable. AS WELL as ignorant.

might add to this that, yes malis destroy boxes, but quality of airline crates today, versus, lets say 15 years back, is a world of difference, many of todays boxes are a one time use only quality, if they even survive that one time

Prager

Any larger breed can bust out of the crate. However, I am importing 100s of dogs and I have to yet see a dog trying to get out of the crate in transport. While in familiar surroundings dog may want to bust out in strange surrounding the dog will usually use the crate as a security blanket or a den and do it's best to stay in. Dogs sometimes will try to bust out to attack the dog in crate next to them. But in that case, the crates had to be separated and in any case, any breed can do that, not just Malis. . Also a reminder, the United itself is not talking about busting out of the crates which could remotely make sense. They are talking weird crap about "strong-jawed dogs" which so weird that even here nobody knows what to say about that.

As far as I have ever seen (although my import/export experience is nowhere near as wide as Prager's, I'm convinced he is right) the sort of damage a dog can do to a crate - like in Duke's pics - is done with their front feet power, every bit as much as with their jaw power !!!  Yes of course they can do a lot of damage to a plastic crate with their teeth (and paws & jaws) - but it does not look to me as though that photographed crate was escaped from.  So inconvenience to the airline is minimal.  And let's repeat - not ALL Malis are 'mad' enough to do this; and not ALL dogs who do this to a crate are Malinois.

@Duke: it might be expensive and irritating for an owner that those crates can be ruined by one determined dog (and thus have to be replaced rather than re-used), but this surely does not justify United's policy ?
