Hi Frances, welcome to PDB. I hope someone here can suggest Chicago area Trainers and Training Clubs for you (sorry I can't, I'm in the UK).

You ask if it is good to send a puppy to a 'training institution' - I'm assuming you mean finding trainer(s) who will take your dog on a residential basis, then send it back to you 'fully trained' ? For my money, no. There are much better results for the relationship between you and your dog if you find a club where you can attend regularly and learn alongside your puppy. I'm sure there are good training schools which take your dog and do it for you, but I still think you miss out on a lot, and sometimes they come back but because an owner has not learned with them how to voice commands etc the dog gets confused and does not perform as well as it should. There are also often horrible stories of owners getting ripped off by certain trainers, or them not treating the dog as well as you'd like.

Work out what sort of Training you want to put on your dog, whether basic pet obedience, or something for Competition (a lot of members here do IPO [Schutzhund] but maybe you don't want that sort of training for a Goldie ?) then find a Club which teaches that area of dog training - and enjoy !

franceshogan ,
Most people put the cart before the horse. They think training , as you call it develops the relationship. But as I wrote , that is the cart before the horse. Actually the opposite is the reality . Your relationship determines what you have for the final totality of the dog. Your relationship with your dog determines everything , what , how and when you dog learns and how it responds to you irregadrless what it has learned from anyone else !Training is a most inappropriate word and one of the most stupid words used when it comes to animals.

What we do with dogs and children is to raise them to be productive through teaching. . That teaching is predicated on the dog first trusting you , respecting you , feeling safe and secure with you etc etc. . ,Teaching is comprised of matters such as : teaching manners [ this is different than obedience] , setting absolute rules to follow and boundaries , and placing responsibility onto them , these matters , all being accomplished through communication and correct interaction . No dog or child can learn unless they are motivated , you have their undivided attention , and your communication is such that the real attainable expectations that you want are made simple and clear to them. Once what you have taught them is completely understood then you must always be in a position to enforce and discipline , one way or another when the rules are broken.

So , this is more than a definite NO , to having someone else teach your dog because no one else can take your place. . This is akin to parents have someone else raise their children and thinking that they are parents. There is nothing wrong with someone to learn better parenting skills , that is actually intelligent. Same with animals , if you are not sure how to talk dog talk , communicate with your dog , to establish the best relationship with your dog , the it is most reasonable to seek out these people that can help you. But.. don't seek people out that just put you and your dog through a bunch of so called exercises alone ! Think about this : can a dog sit, does a dog lay down , does a dog come to you , does a dog go away from you , does a dog jump ? all these things dogs do .. so to emphasize.. then what is it that you in essence are striving for .. that answer should be the most optimal relationship with your dog .. All that simply is the difference is that your dogs acts in conjunction with you , takes it cue from you .. And it never will unless you have the right relationship !.... Never let anyone else do your work ...
BTW , go to dog class - first go and see what transpires in the class ... and f you are impressed then sign on for the classes !!
