what level is allowed, half brother half sister, or a 3-3-3 for example

As far as I know there are no restrictions at all, but that´s just "2. hand knowledge".

AFAIK, there are no restrictions. Anything goes - brother/sister, father/daughter. What Smile

Rumor, the top dog at Westminister this year, has a half-brother x half-sister mating in her pedigree.

Sometimes the amount of line-breeding in ASL pedigrees reaches ridiculous levels. I've talked to some Canadian show line breeders who seem to have NO CLUE how harmful inbreeding can be.  Omg Smile

ok, in holland they made restrictions to avoid close linebreeding, dont know what SV rules are according to close linebreeding

The closest SV allows I think is 3-2

Most knowledgeable breeders won't do closer than 4-4, and 5-5 is considered ideal. If you're going to breed really close, you'd better damn well know what you're doing, and follow up by outcrossing your lines.

But hey, stuff happens...and not all close breedings are intentional! The mother of one of my dogs climbed an 8 foot fence to get herself in with the stud. Fortunately, he was the same breed...

actually, sunsilver, I think 4-4 and 5-5 combinations bring nothing different than any other breeding and most double ups in 4th and 5th generation I see are accidental

SV used to allow 2/3 or 3/2 breedings for a lot of years.
They changed the rules in 2015 - right now 3/3 is the closest linebreeding allowed.

Oh, thanks for clarifying, Susie, I didn't hear that. I wonder what kind of effect it has made? Probably too early to tell.

Bought this up before, didn't go to well. Just on the logic outcrossing eventually must decrease genetic diversity to zero.

Yes or No?

In my world breeding dogs stays in the same family indefinitely - I contend that INCREASES genetic diversity and in fact DECREASES harmful recessives.

GSD breeders, at least the crappy majority ones, in contrast tend to all flock to the latest big show winner (work or conformation)

No breeder but makes sense in my mind.
