Thanks again, Everyone. JonRob, I really appreciate your reaching out. You seem to know exactly how I feel. The necropsy report came back "Unremarkable." You are right that a necropsy would not reveal many problems in the brain.

I do believe that we'll see our boy in the next life and that he'll be whole and happy. I pray that I never encounter this again. Call it what you will, but we had to kill a healthy happy dog..

I am so sorry to have read about this situation and for the subsequent sorrow the owner has endured. I too have had GSDs my whole life ... and I've experienced many situations but none quite this bizarre... only things closest was "maternal aggression" after a whelping in a white dam that subsided with the hormones IN A FEW WEEKS... and another was a severe epilepsy case .... totally triggered by light. THEN the other situation was a wolf hybrid who'd been chained out to a tree finally experienced a "brain snap" and that's exactly what happened..... he would be great one minute and the next shredding any part of you he could get ahold of.

Euthanasia was the only solution to the Epileptic and the Hybrid's nightmare... The White dam is fine today now that she can no longer breed. RAGE syndrome gives it a name I had never heard referred to on German Shepherds... but as I said my Vet called it "brain snap" and there is no recovery.

My deepest condolences for your heartbreak.

I feel sorry for you and your beloved dog. Sometimes we have to make decisions we don't want to make.
Kind regards

MercurynBella, I'm sorry that you had to euthanize your dog and the hybrid.

Thank you, Susie. It's never easy. Not matter the reason.

My German Shepherd I had, had one instance of rage syndrome towards me while I was in the process of closing his kennel door after putting his dinner in with him. He was 3 1/2 years old. We had previously sent him to a board and train for 2 months as he was having some issues. The rage event came out of nowhere. I decided to take him to work with me the next day and euthanize him as we didn't want him to kill the 2 cats we also had. I am a Certified Vet Tech, so yes that really sucked to have to euth my own dog. I loved him to pieces but it was unsafe to continue on for everyone. I has been 2 1/2 years since I have had to say goodbye to him. "Mikey" (Zippy von Katzel).

Putting HIS dinner in HIS kennel, and ONE sudden aggressive outburst from the dog has nothing to do with the topic being discussed here.

Feeling so sorry for the dog...

Agreed.

The above dog was resource guarding. Has nothing to do with the topic, and honestly, didn't make him a loose cannon.

Ouch ! 'spdr...', that probably feels very harsh from the last 2 posters, doesn't it ? But the clue is in your saying: "We had previously sent him to board & train for 2 months as he was having issues." - in discussing "Rage Syndrome", we are talking about something much more specific than a dog having a 'paddy' where the cause(s) can be worked out. "Rage" comes out of nowhere, with an otherwise trouble-free dog.
Very sad that you had to p.t.s. your dog, and who knows, it may have been a sensible measure in all those circumstances. But it does not sound like an attack of Rage Syndrome.
