The Secretary to the UK GSD Breed Council has recently published some updated remarks on the use of the British showdog most referenced in discussions on this topic, including many threds connected with the Epilepsy problem raised on PDB. To ensure the wider dissemination of this information, I am sure she will not object to my reproducing her piece for a dog newspaper here:

"When Hendrawen's Quadrille of Eveley was born , in

< September 1964 >, who could have predicted that over 50 years later Breeders would still be arguing about his influence on this breed ?

There cannot be many who have never heard of Quadrille, but for the benefit of those who have not: Quadrille was an attractive dog who won a Challenge Certificate at an early age and was used fairly extensively at stud. He was also a 'fitter', although this was not known until it was made public that some of his offspring were fitting.  Some of these died or were put down by their breeders, and some quietly disappeared from the Show scene, never to be heard of again. There were (and still are) breeders who would not countenance breeding with even a single line to Quadrille. Others, knowing they had lines to Quadrille in their stock, conscientiously checked that they would not be bringing in any more lines when contemplating a mating.

However, these days there are breeders who believe that a dog (now) so far back in their pedigrees cannot be a risk of producing idiopathic epilepsy, and are producing litters with numerous lines going back to Quadrille.  Our UK GSD Breed

Health Coordinator recently checked a pedigree with 1,270 lines to him; and there will certainly be fitting descendents of his closer up in that pedigree.

Those who know they have Quadrille anywhere in their lines,

and those who would not want even a single line to him, may well think of using a German dog, in the belief that whatever else lurks in the pedigree, Quadrille will not be there. But - be warned - there are dogs in Germany that also have lines to Quadrille, including the 2016 Sieger*; and, given that he is now six years old, he probably has dozens of progeny spread throughout the world."
