I have a question. I have a almost 17 months male Czech dark sable GSD who weight I am concern about. He is weighing only 65lbs at this age. My question is, is he small for his age? If so,what can I do to put weight on him. I am more use to GSD weighing 100+ lbs as that was the size of the one I grew up when I was a little girl. If someone could please give some insight I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

If you can't see or feel his hips, he is a good weight. 66lbs-88lbs is standard for males.

Czech lines mature more slowly than the others. If he's healthy, happy, and active, and the veterinarian is happy, I wouldn't worry. Better to be lean and avoid later problems from becoming overweight (even if only temporarily). You might be feeding a better food, now, than was available back then when your dog got heavy early... higher protein percentage now means fewer calories have to be consumed to get the needed nutrition, so fewer carbs stored as fat/weight, so better for the joints/hips now and especially later. You might check with the breeder, too.

Thank you both so very much for answering my questions. I guess I was just worried because of the one I had when i was a little girl.

I never judge a dog's weight by any scale or generalized rating system...I would ONLY judge a dog on themself and how they are on their own frame...

All dogs and in particular German Shepherds don't grow at the same rates...Even among litter-mates...I just let them be what they're destined to be...Usually litter-mates will be even when mature...

@ Q thanks I appreciate your input . I do believe you are correct . I think originally I posted because I've taken Beauty to several shows & she has been somewhat larger than the other females in her class. Thought I'd get onto PDB to see what the more experienced GSD folks considered proper weight. I think I read too much into it. LOL , like a first time mom I worry about everything. In my mind I'm thinking goodness is Beauty a little on the fluffy side? But she's absolutely fine. She gets plenty of exercise & has a healthy appetite. Again thanks
