A very good discussion about nutrition and CCL injuries which are both very common and very problematic in large breed dogs.

I am presently investigating wheatgrass and/or barleygrass sprouts as part of my dog's diet as these are some very concentrated and natural sources for manganese and many other important nutrients ( we all know dogs like to eat grasses and I am sure there is a reason ).

Brown rice is also a source, with the price of meat proteins reaching into the ouch factor I use brown rice in the diet to bring the cost down and add manganese, thiamine, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and potassium.

My dogs like rice .. especially with some canned salmon plus juices in the can. Brown rice, coconut oil and even better flax seed oil ( in small amounts ) all are healthy sources of manganese. I feed raw beef liver or chicken livers 1/3 pound once per week ( $2 per pound in the frozen food section ). I also feed canned salmon 1/2 pound once per week with rice. If you are going to feed carbohydrates make it good, clean and non-gmo carbohydrates such as rice and certainly not corn.
