Humans have a unique ability to misinterpret the actions of dogs and animals in general .. we are a stupid species. Most dogs will fight with a snake and the presence of humans is not required for them to do it. Any type of medium sized terrier is a snakes worst enemy. I grew up in rattlesnake country and rattlesnakes are not looking for a fight with a human or a dog. The only time I ever saw a rattlesnake in the wild ( I heard a couple warning me ) was crossing roads and that is where most get killed by cars or humans. Cutting hay and putting it in the barns is a good place to see snakes but all but those snakes with injuries will run at the sight of a human, tractor, dog, etc. I learned to leave them alone and like black widow spiders you can live with them all around and never see or be bitten by one except by accident on your part because you don't know their habits.

Don't know if the dog was protecting the child or not I think it was amazing that this dog lived thru it Maybe he was or maybe he was not I don't know but I believe that we know that a GSD can be protective of his people without any formal training or am I wrong? Don't mean to start a debate just some info on wonderful Vets
