Just wanted to know some info , I feel like every posting title I make should say (NEWBIE). As far as when people say American Shepherd, what exactly are they talking about? I also would like some help understanding my male GSDs pedigree. Is he considered an American Shepherd ? I don't know how to post the link to his pedigree though. Have tons of questions about different things . Do I just make different postings on each subject? Thanks in advance for any help.

If you hold your mouse over the editor buttons a tool tip will popup to tell you what that button does. There is a tutorial forum in the list of forums in the left menu.

Look for An image this button to create a link.

Add the link in the url line and then click ok.

Lady Boss,

I am not an expert on pedigree's by a long shot. However, I have looked at enough of them by now to be able to help you understand a few things. All GSD's come from the same place: Germany, of course. The German's are very concise on how they want their breed to be approached, with titles and testings for breedworthiness. After the wars, the GSD started to become popular in other countries, who used their own standards to promote their best dogs. In the UK, the breed name became known as the "Alsatian", as the wounds from the wars were still raw. In the USA, the AKC show scene breeders developed enough of a difference in the looks and standards, without some of the more rigorous breed worthy testiings of all those IPO and Schutzhund titles you see attached to a dog's name.

The Czech lines were developed originally for boarder patrol and a more civil temperament. Civil meaning, a willingness to bite a human without any protection equipment. Also, before the wall came down and Germany was divided into East and West, there also became certain distinctions that made differences in temperament, or looks and you will hear people talk about DDR dogs. There are no new DDR dogs, just dog lines that originated from when Germany used to be a divided country.

I look at your beautiful dog, first. And then I looked at your pedigree. Your dog has a bit of everything, except maybe "Alsation". As far as I can tell. Someone might know better, and correct me where I go wrong in my telling to you! Now, as a clue, American Showlines, such as Xeph is a big fan of, and quite successful with breeding and showing, (Westminster, no less!) usually has some kind of long story sounding name. lol  I know, it isn't an exacting way to figure this stuff out! Also, they will have show titles, and rarely any IPO titles. Black and Tan or Red, predominates, but there are blacks, too, just usually the judges are not fond of sables. Go figure!

Your dog has German Highlines, the tip off there would be seeing names like Weinerau and Arminius. German showline dogs are usually Black and Reds, too. Always show rated such as V, or SG, etc. And always breed tested with Schuthund titles, I, II , III. (This is a basic course, for you— I won't get into korung, let some expert guide you there!)

I also saw DDR, way back, too. And Czech; the Jikora Divorka (sp?) name, and sables are the clue!

So, you have a bit of everything. Some breeders will not be thrilled with a mix as yours, but really, who cares? Your dog is wonderful to you! And that is what matters the most. :)

Hope this helps to get some answers started for you! It usually does, especially if I mess up somewhere with my explaination. Wink Smile

@beetree, thanks so much that really helps clarify things. I appreciate you taking the time to explain it all to such a novice as myself. I hope I'm not asking too many questions. I just feel like this site has the most knowledgeable people & you get so many different answers from others. I also have a little Sable girl would you be so kind as too look at her pedigree as well? Or do I need to start a new post? Also I tried to post the link as someone suggested but still couldn't figure it out. I can post pics but sometimes it doesn't let me. Again thanks I feel like I've learned something. Also thanks for your kind words regarding my Kahn he is really something else!  He's an amazing dog who has a killer personality  & loves to train & work .

The pic problem is probably caused by the pics being to large. You will need to resize the pic before you can add it here.
