We have a nearly 14 year old GSD that's on Science Diet Active Longevity. It's only 16% protein which is easy on the kidney's. Old dogs need low protein food. There are a few more out there but the Science Diet has worked well and he's still going strong.

Thank you for the info. Do you use any supplements or vitamins along with that diet?? Just curious, as I know what works for one may not work for another, but feel knowledge is power... Thx again Nan

As far as supplements go I like the "Young at Heart" from Animal Naturals... although I order from http://www.k9power.com

Thanks Jyl; it really looks pretty good; do you use their recommended dose? Sounds like a lot of supplement?? Thanks again Nan

I use about e teaspoon a day for an adult GSD... I also like the Joint Strong. It is a great glucosamine supplement.

And out of curiosity; have you all heard that you are NOT supposed to start any dog under l year old on glucosamine/cond. supplements. That is what a vet told me (that I really did not know very well) is why I am questioning that. My boy is older but just curious about that statement. Maybe Dr. Becker's site may have some insight on the subject. Thx to all Nan

Axel is 14 years old and if it were up to him it would be PBJ twice a day!!
