Hello,

Does anyone here have an above ground pool that they let their GSD's swim in?

If so what type of material is used for the walls and how is it holding up?

I'm asking because I've been thinking about buying an above ground pool to swim my GSd's in for the summer. We live in the desert and do not have bodies of water available to swim the dogs in.

There is a dog facility that has a pool to swim the dogs, but they charge $20.00 per dog per session and they only allow the dog to be swam twice a week. At $80 per week adds up fast so, I figure for the cost I'd be better off buying an above ground pool for the summer, providing they hold up.

Your thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Cheri

Would  you be  using Chlorine in the dogs water...???   Salt water pool is safe but I would never let my dog swim in chlorine water...I do not allow mine to even drink it..my well water is fine or bottle water here in my new home which has city water and you can smell the chlorine when you turn on water..\

I cannot bathe in chlorine..so we put a filter in bathrooms, showers and my jacuzzi..

I wash my personal clothes  in the filter water also as clothes do cause irritation.

I might take some time and talk to these people about your options.

I have swam in chlorinated pools for years and years. Drank city water for years let my dogs swim in my pool at the end of the season and we are all alive and kicking. I do suggest rinsing everybody off after a swim in any water.

Its a common misconception but, the truth is that salt water pools have the same level of chlorine as non-salt water. The difference being you do not normally have to add chlorine except in the high temp summer season, saltwater systems use a chlorine generator cell that converts the salt to chlorine and they still require shocking especially after swimming our dogs. just have to hose them down after swimming and then take them on a quick car ride around town to dry them off. So when i cant get to the lake my back yard pool works well for me, but man does the dog hair cause a heck of a mess LOL

Here is the above ground one at our SchH club, its just a heavy vinyl

^ That's the type of pool we dock dive in.  The org we compete with has several.  My dogs have never had an issue with chlorine (I'm not sure how much they use).

Just sayin...if I had an above ground pool, I would be VERY careful to not give my dog access to it unless I was there to watch. They don't have steps the way in-ground pools do, so they are much more of a hazard for drowning!

Chlorine will irritate the skin, so make sure you rinse. The water irritates my eyes, sinuses and nasal passages to the point where I really can't swim in it, or I risk getting sick. Sad Smile

The ones designed for dog use have ramps.  The first thing you do is train the dog how to get out.  If I'm doing a weekend long event somewhere, I take my experienced dog over the ramp *first* so he always knows where and how to exit.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all of the great responses.

The dog facility, that I used in the past, uses Bromine to treat their dog pools and Cisco never had a problem with it.

Costco has an Inotech rectangular package with pump and ladder for $600.00 in my local store. It looks like the mini version of the pool Cutaway posted.

Cutaway....Love that pool. Wish our club had one of those. Your picture looks (with the Palo Verde and Eucalyptus trees in the back ground) like your in the southwest some where. Are we neighbors?

VKGSD..... Always thought my dogs would love dock diving.....especially Ava...who has springs for rear legs....LOL

GSD.....Thanks for the link. Holy Cow those pools are pricey.

Does anyone have a preference on brand?

Where do you guys get the dog ramp for the pool?
