It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing.  My 7 yr old female GSD, Apache vom Haus Willow is scheduled for euthanasia on Wednesday, 3/26/14 due to complications from Degenerative Myleopathy, DM.  This is a disease I had heard about but, never witnessed until now.  It is an awful, debilitating disease that takes it's toll on not just the dog, but the entire family.  From onset of first symptoms to now, it has only been 7 months.  She has progressed rapidly to the point of not being able to hold her bladder and bowles.  She is an amazing girl with the best attitude.  It breaks my heart in so many ways to have to put her down but, I know that it is the most humane thing to do for her at this time.  I love her with every beat of my heart.  This will be the hardest thing I have done.  :(

I'm so sorry.

Have you done an MRI or even CT scan? That also sounds like possible CE. Many vets misdiagnose it as DM. If you euthanize her, will you have the test for DM done? It's the only way to accurately diagnose it and it would be so helpful for so many others to know if it was or was not DM.

I am so very sorry for you and your dear Apache girl. Rose Your decision is one made from love, I do know that. DM is heartbreaking, I agree.

I am so sorry to hear this news "Yet again".  I have personally been through this myself with a 7 3/4 year old male and understand the toll it takes on us humans.  Definitely an unforgetable experience and one I do not care to share ever again.  Your girl's symptoms sound similar to my boys and at the same age.  Just know how sorry I am and that you are definitely making the right unselfish decision at this time for your girl.  RIP Apache...

I am so very sorry. Far too many people have had this experience, and it is truly dreadful.  As Bee said, you are doing this out of love and compassion...try to hold onto that.

I am so sorry. I can relate all too well to the anguish, pain and sadness you are experiencing. I had to say goodby to my sweet girl last year on February 24th. She is the dog in my avatar.  She had DM and had lost her bladder and bowel function and had started to show early signs of her diaphragm being affected. She was also around 7 or 8 years old (she was a rescue).  It is a horrific disease. It is hearthbreaking to watch them decline and there comes a time when the most loving and humane thing to do is to say goodbye. You will be in my thoughts and prayers on the 26th. In the meantime I know you will cherish every moment with your beloved Apache.  Sending hugs to you xxxxx

I am very sorry you are going through this.
It must be heartbreaking.
Apache you are obviously very loved and are so because of what you are as a dog and a companion.
