Yes that's my dog Nikon.  The bottom picture is the latest one (from last weekend).

Have you managed to get to a club yet, Fawn? I've only recently started going to one (took Qira to get eval'd this weekend, for fun), and I think Saturdays are my favorite days of the week now. Teeth Smile You won't want to leave! It is nice being around people who actually know that GSD's can be solid black, and even by just watching you learn a tooonnnn more than you ever will on here.

VKGSD's - I love Nikon... what a gorgeous dog!

Planning on this weekend.  I wish I could go every weekend.  I think the next one listed is in February, maybe March.   I was kind of hoping Cirberus and I could do the BH in that one, but my research said she has to be 15 months.

Fawndallas, the German dogs began to  split into SL/WL back in the late '70's, with Canto von Arminius. I suggest you take a look at the VA list  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/siegershow_winners.html  and study the pedigrees.

Also, note how the structure of the dogs began to change. The colour became increasingly black and red, the heads became heavier, the overall structure became heavier, and the backs became arched, because the PTB in the SV believed an arched back was stronger.  This change was due to the influence of the Martin brothers. http://www.angelplace.net/usca/MartinShepherd.htm

As you can see, Jim Engel, who sometimes posts here, is very predjudiced against the German showlines, but this is one of the best, most succinct articles available to explain how the split took place.

Please note, there is a LOT of disagreement out there as to what consitutes a 'roached' back. That's why I have used the term 'arched back' instead.

Sunsilver, I like the term "Martin Shepherd" and also agree with the jist of his article for the most part.

Aaakay, don't want to go there, so no comment. I'm on the fence here, because my girlt is half German show line. (But my next dog is going to be WL.)

Just trying to answer FD's question!

It was something that took me a long time to figure out, too, when I first became aware of the differences. People will tell you about how the weak backs had to be strengthened, etc. etc., but the REAL reasons were mainly political.

I have not seen the red and black GSD before.  Look at the thread "Daddy's Lil Girl."   Is this the deep red and black you are talking about?   If so, that is beautiful.

Are most red and blacks the medium/ long coats or are there some in the short coat (traditional AM tan and black)?
