We are the proud owners of two gorgeous German Shepherds (DDR). They are obviously a part of our family and are like our kids.  We are also currently in the process of moving back to Ohio due to military relocation.  In that process, we've been contacting several rental houses in the area.  We were told today that one home would not allow us because German Shepherds are on the "Ohio Vicious Dog List."  After searching, all I have come up with (from the Ohio Codes) are that Pit Bulls are the only breed mentioned in the dog codes....that I found.  I also checked with State Farm (a random insurance agent that popped up in the search results) that stated they would insure anyone EXCEPT Pit Bulls, as those were the only dogs mentioned in the Ohio Codes.

I am at a loss.  My dogs are far from vicious....unless provoked by "intruders" or our command....as is their nature.  I would like to contact the rental home again (as it is the perfect home for us) with evidence that they are NOT on the list.  Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, or substantial information that I can present?

Thanks so much!

Rental owners can pick and choose who they rent to so I'm not sure presenting any more information would even help.

I do understand and respect that....but to actually say they are on the "Vicious Dog List" is a different story.

I just would like to call them back (if the dogs are NOT on the list) and provide them with the facts instead of them saying this.....

OFFER TO OBTAIN RENTERS INSURANCE, INCLUDING ON THE DOGS. State Farm would also be your best bet.

Don't blame em! If I were a GSD in Ohio, I'd bite every buckeye I came across. GSDs are smart. They know an eyhol when they see one.

It's true that rentals can choose. You can also have them "interview" your dogs. Perhaps when you call you can ask if they would be willing to do so?

It won't hurt to try of course, but the vicious dog issue might just be an excuse.  Some people just don't like to rent out to families with pets.

The holders or ownership of the rented property, have insurance no doubt on that property for their protection and like it or not most inusrances have a list of  UNDESIRABLE BREED of DOGS and the german shepherd is in that list.

IT is a dangerous species and has been placed on that list .

SO the insuror,  will void their property insurance if a GSD< etc, pit bull, rotty etc are found on the property.

THAT is my guess..it has nothing to do with the renter..it is the INSURANCE companies>

VERY few insurance companies will write if they know before hand you have german shepherds. And especially rented properties, which are in the  pay and go list anyway.

You can also put a "Service Title" on your dog. If you DR. tells you, you need assistance to pick things up, you need a claming influence and petting a dog helps calm you. Then train and title the dog for service. They can not deny you or the dog.
