Hi Everyone,
I am looking at a dog to purchase and just noticed that his sire is the son of his mother. This seems a little to close of a breeding to me. What do you guys think? Is this a common practice? If you PM me I will give you the dogs name so you can look at his pedigree.

I would pay pet fee for the dog maybe. Just as a companion. Crap happens these days ... I would have to have a serious explanation what is being accompished by this!

Unless this breeding was done by someone who has many generations of intimate knowledge of the dogs involved, I would not consider it.

Some lines are healthy enough to get away with it, but if it's a breeding with no health/temperament checks, and the dogs are mediocre, than they could be loaded with genetic defects.
The person either studied their butt off to learn all the dogs faults & weaknesses in the background, which you would need only study a few generations cause of the close breeding, or the person is counting on "The luck of the draw!"

NOT common and definately something to be "aware" of - and find out the reason for this close inbreeding. Better be a really good reason IMO.

I do not think you should have posted this if you are not gonna be upfront with the pedigree..We are all adults here..Evidentually you know it is a DANGEROUS situation or you would not ask.
Use your OWN intuition.
OR share on the board the pedigree.. I do not wish to pm something and she said he said..PUT it out in the open...IT is not a disgrace...GOOD breeding has been done this way..Just DEPENDS....not the diaper......
JUST DEPENDS on what GSD it is and what lineage it comes from...NO ONE CAN ANSWER a BLANKET QUESTION on this one.

I saw the litter posted for sale in the puppy ads. I am fairly certain they are one in the same. I viewed the website associated with the litter and found no mention on the website of the closeness of the in breeding. And they are asking a pretty high price for the pups. Maybe so people will think it's something special.
This is just my opinion but I would steer clear of any litter with that close and much inbreeding. As it is more than line breeding. Regardless if the parents or previous pups have passed OFA, etc...
Again this is just my opinion. I don't know this breeder or any of the dogs.
