So Ive been thinking about buying a pup from Ayer's Shepherds but I know theres been some talk that her GSD's arent what you should look for in a dog. Im new to this sort of thing. So whats so bad about breeding GSDs to be oversized and friendly?  Id love to have a large friendly dog. Has anyone ever gotten a pup from her? And if her dogs are so bad then which reputable breeders out there  sell quality long coat GSD pups?

To me I simply wouldnt buy one because its just NOT what the German Shepherd is supposed to be. To produce GSDs that are out of standard is wrong. Also with "oversized" comes major health problems. Geman shepherds are supposed to be medium sized, short coated, WORKING DOGS! Help us keep them that way. Please dont support bad breedings!

you can find a long-coated pup with a great temperament from a breeder who breeds for the standard and not for "oversize, long coat and friendly".  Long-coat is a recessive and it happens in many excellent quality well-bred litters.

lol I mean theyre really beautiful dogs. I dont see what the real problem is, besides the breed standard. Im just looking for a laid back family pet so to be honest, I dont really care much that her dogs arent within the standard., so long as that doesnt jeopradise its health.

I'm not looking for show dogs or anything. Once theyre friendly and healthy.

You want a large, laid-back, friendly dog.  GSD's aren't supposed to be very large, they aren't supposed to be laid-back, and they aren't supposed to be real friendly with strangers.

Have you considered a Great Dane?  Or a St. Bernard?  Or a big, friendly, laid-back mixed breed from the shelter?

It jeopardizes the breed! Is that important enough. They are breeding for dogs that are out of the standard.

You are looking for a big hairly freindly dog:

Try a great pyrenees...

Dont like white? Maybe a Newfoundland:

Or maybe brown... A Saint Bernard?

Just fair hips and elbows on the parents?  Might be wrong....but a slight smell of a better than average troll in here.

hello. I am new to this board also. I own a long coat female GSD. She is one of the best shepherds in terms of loalty and intelligence that I have ever owned. I did not get her from Ayers, however I would not hesitate to do so. Nova(her name) is half king Shepherd [ from her father] Even though she is larger than the standard calls for I have no intention of breeding her. She is my companion and friend. She has her CGC and loves children. If you like the long coats then I say go for it and buy one.
