Tamiflu To Treat Parvo? - Page 1

I have been hearing around that Tamiflu will kill Parvo in dogs very quickly. I have a vet in my state said he has had a 98% success rate with tamiflu. He said 25mg twice a day for 5 days and after 24 hours of treatment its amazing.

I have talked to other vets about it and they say testing is in the works but not sure one way or the other if it works.

Just want to know your thoughts about this. If it is true then 100's of dogs could be saved by this pill.

There is also a new strand of Parvo that is the worst seen in many years, does the shots we give our dogs now work with this new strand or will they have to come up with a new shot for this?


Any thoughts on this?

sounds like tamiflu may help but it is not a cure......

TAMIFLU® (OSELTAMIVIR)
While this particular addition to the parvo treatment plan has not universally caught on everywhere, news of its efficacy has spread far and wide. This oral medication is typically given for five days starting as soon as the diagnosis is made. It interferes with the reproduction of the parvovirus so that the patient’s immune system essentially has fewer enemy soldiers to combat. This medication is helpful in the treatment of parvo patients plus can prevent development of the disease when given to exposed puppies. The key is to begin this treatment before the virus has had a chance to maximize its numbers; if treatment is started later in the infection, there may be so many viral particles present that little benefit can be realized.

I think it would be a dangerous practice giving Tamiflu to dogs.
Dangerous for man.

I repeat,
A very bad idea.

Maybe its a bad idea to YOU, but I can assure you it was a wonderful idea for the many puppies whose lives have been saved by using it. Many rescues have pulled pups back from the brink of death through the use of Tamiflu. I do not advocate administering it without consulting a vet, for correct dosages, but there would be many more dead pups if others shared your view.

Even VIN is acknowledging it as a use for Parvo

You don't understand why its a bad idea.
I don't care to explain it because it would do no good.
One day you'll figure it out after it is too late.

two moons, you could say more then its a bad idea. WHY is it a bad idea? If you think it is bad then help us out in understanding why it is bad, saying your just not going to say does not help anyone.

Improper use can lead to resistant strains and can bleed over to involve humans
Super strains that can do real harm.
Its happened before, one day it will be a disaster.
Its bad enough that the government is forcing flu shots down everyones throats.
They wanted to do the same with young girls and the Pavalona anti-virus vaccine.   (hope I spelled that right).
Farmers abusing anti-biotics has caused much concern, several were removed from the market because they were showing up in the meat supply and in humans.
There are better ways to prevent parvo.  Prevention is the key, instead of waiting until its a problem.
Sometimes the cure is not what you'd expect.
Sometimes there are losses.
Same way with our health care, not enough goes into prevention.  Its more profitable to treat things after the fact instead of preventing them before they become problems.
No one seems to use logic anymore, its just not convenient enough.
Lets see how the fall and winter flu season goes this year.
And how high the cost becomes.
