Recently someone posted about a show quality pup that had several serious problems and I cannot locate the post. It was related to the comments of the Von Ajaye Kennel. But this pup had among other things and inverted ????. I cannot find the post and I was wondering what this ailment was and its consequences. Does anyone recall? Sunny

Hi Sunny, it was an inverted labia. Chris

I also noticed that thread's disappearance... Among the multiple issues that gsdwins' pup apparently came with was something that was referred to as an 'inverted labia'. Technically, this condition is usually called an inverted vulva; in these females, the external genital structure is tucked inward, basically 'hidden' in the junction of the hind legs and buttocks. The initial difficulty of such is that the dog is unable to urinate cleanly, and each voiding episode leaves residual urine on the exterior surface of the vulva and the surrounding fur and skin in the groin area. In short order these tissues become urine-scalded and irritated, and secondary infections such as staphylococcus can take hold in the broken skin. Treatment is difficult because it's virtually impossible to adequately protect the damaged skin and genitalia from continued exposure. As a result, getting the area to heal is quite a chore, requiring great diligence from the owner to ensure that the pup's bottom is patted dry and then treated with a skin protecting agent after each potty venture. These pups are also more prone to infections of the lower urinary tract due to bacteria migrating into the urethra via the vaginal opening. Breeding a female with an inverted vulva is also a problem; some may be unwilling to allow the male to complete the breeding because of discomfort, while others aren't even capable of allowing the male to penetrate. In some instances, the condition resolves after the female has gone through one or more heat cycles, so it is in the best interest of the dog to delay any plan for spaying until the female has completed one heat. If it doesn't improve the situation, however, surgical intervention in needed in cases where the inversion is significant enough to cause a near-constant state of urine scald and skin infection.

I just looked up the term in the dictionary. Hexe, you appear particularly knowledgeable and thank you. My questions would be, if you are up to it, what is the incidence of this "abnormality" in our breed? At what age would one notice this abnormality in a pup? Is this a genetic abnormality? And lastly, is it even recommendable to breed to a bitch that has this abnormality considering your pen ultimate paragraph and aside from all the other issues that gsdwins' pup has. . .

I am just trying to learn some things and the problems have been faced by many that this pup was suffering it seems that it took a worthwhile direction in explaining these health issues that i am sure many have needed knowledge of?

Rather than have it buried in this thread, which could also disappear at a moment's notice, I've replied in a separate post under the heading, "More Info on inverted vulvas"--which is sure to get it banned via someone's security set-up, I'm sure. :^(
