To treat the ear itself try a product called Veterinarians Choice. I buy it at "PET SMART" stores. It is cheap and very effective for ear problems. You can try diet changes, shots and even rub crystals over your dogs belly but sometimes an ear problem is just an ear problem. It is unusual for dogs to get ear mites. Do you also have cats? (Could be the source).

Have you tried Blue Power Ear Wash? http://www.mariebennett.com/blueear/ I have four GSDs ranging in ages from 10 months to nearly 11 years and this stuff works! One of my dogs, now deceased, developped some very nasty ear infections late in life. After hundreds of dollars at the vet's with only marginal results I mixed up a batch of this and treated him with it. Messy, yes, but very very good. You may laugh but I've used it on myself also, being prone to outer ear infections. Stops the itch, dries the ear canal, will definitely stain your skin and fur :) But it wears off. As always, causative agents should be determined and diagnosed by a vet. But if your dog's ear problems are the result of environmental allergies (stuff in the air, surfaces he walks on, etc) and yu don't want to turn him into a prednisone dependent freak, try this remedy.
