I believe that Klossbruhe says what it really is, and that it is still not proven why. On the other hand, Blitzen laughs, thinking there is no worst smell as the stool itself. Well, this could be to us humans, but what about the dogs? I personally love Limburger cheese, but it does have a very strong smell ;-) Best regards.

Is the dog eating kibble? I've never seen a dog on a raw diet eat stool. Has anyone? I read a recommendation on another list where someone suggested adding Solid Gold canned Green Tripe to the food and that seemed to have the most success. Talk about things that smell bad, though...tripe is some pretty awful stuff...yuck!

Diane, In answer to your question has anyone ever seen or had a dog which ate its own stools that was on a raw diet, the answer is yes. I have. Not only my own dog, but also 2 others in a kennel where I worked. My dog was on Carnique, the others were on raw chicken, beef bones and pureed vegetables.

I'm convinced; some dogs do it just because they can and nothing is going to stop them.

Klossbruhe, Well, there goes another myth down the drain! I think Blitzen is probably right...so you just have to be sure they "can't".

Dacotah

Blitzen, your first post was too funny, I am still laughing! Anyway, my older dog Dacotah has ALWAYS been a poop eater, I have tried everything.... He will even go and eat the other dog's poop as well. He also eats dirt. The new pup Ashton sniffs it after he goes, then runs away from it, LOL.

by Blitzen on 08 November 2004 - 05:11

Ashton is my kind of dog. After having a number of stool eaters over the years, it's a big plus to me to have one that runs in the opposite direction after he's finished. In fact, I would select against stool eating if I were a breeder LOL.

I feed raw food and I have on a few occasions seen my dogs eat their stool. I live on a farm and my dogs also occasionally eat horse poop as well. If I see this, I ususally add some yogert to their diet to help get them replentish benificial bacteria in their GI tract. My interpretation of stool eating relates to an imbalance of bacteria in the GI tract. Each time I have noted my dogs eating their stool it has been shortlived and never became a habit. I have also not experienced any health problems related to stool eating.

anytime that I have a dog eating their or others stool I start adding v-8 juice to thier food, the tomatoes will become very acidy in the poop and this has worked for most of the dogs to get them to stop. Good luck.

I was told by my vet that it could have something to do with a lack of enzymes shepherds are prone to juvenile pancreatis, this can be out grown, the undigested protein in the stool is what they are after.. Go get a blood test, just in case.. You would then have to change to a,low fat diet wich is low in protein... I know a friend used curry powder with excellent results!!!
