Does anyone know if a dog has to be tattooed in order to be shown in the German style conformation shows?

by SGBH on 31 October 2004 - 05:10

Yes. If I am not mistaken is has to be a 2letter, 4 numeric tattoo, that is issued by the SV. If the animal is not SV registered it still has to have a tattoo. If not SV registered, then the tattoo is a unique tattoo assigned by the breeder.

Oh, I just reread your post you said "German style", not German conformation shows. Ignore my previous post. I don't know.

I did think that the dogs had to be tattooed to show in Germany. I am just not sure if they have to be tattooed to show here in the states. :-))

Yes, I believe tattoos (or some sort of id, ie.. microchip but then you have to be able to read it) are required for German style shows.....

contact the USA club directly as well as the WDA club via the internet to be sure. My guess is yes.

Under United Schutzhund Clubs of America and WDA rules, both of which abide by conformation rules set forth by the SV, a dog must be tattooed once it is one year or older in order to have a conformation rating given at a show. Records must match. As well, the dog must be registered with the USA or WDA, and hence the SV, or registration be in progress with the SV through one of the organizations (and that can take a year or more) in order to be shown if the dog is one year old or more. Both US organizations give letters stating the dogs' registration is in progress so that a dog can be shown once registered with the US organization. Puppies conformation ratings do not count and therefore, no one cares if they have their tattoos or even all the paperwork in order. Conformation ratings for pups do not mean anything and are not recorded by the SV, though we all get our egos involved and like to see and hear what a given judge will say about a given dog.

Check the Schutzhund USA website, they have all the new rules listed regarding the tattoos. Hodie is correct.
