Dogs that are 24 months old are considered "grown up". Their physical development by that age is finnished, they are hip surveyed, should have their work titles and koerung. Therefore, they have all necessary preconditions which would determine whether they should be allowed to breed. This is when we talk about rules of SV and breed clubs. In reality in some countries it is allowed to breed females when14 months old and males when 18 months old. Owners and breeders just need to choose which rule they apply.

I can't believe some of you people here breed German Shepherds. They are alot of poor breeder out there I can clearly see that from the comments made. I now understand why so many poor quality German Sherpherds are produced in American. This is the most basic question of all and if you don't know the answer or have a problem with the SV rules you show not be breeding or better yet you should not think of breeding. Until you understand this breed by spending time with many GSD of all different age don't breed. Please for the love of the breed get some education about psychological, behavioral and physical maturity of this breed then leave our noble breed alone. Thank you I love this breed I appreciate good breeder I rescent .........Bad things

Breeding a male or female before it has been titled, breed surveyed and hip/elbow certified is irresponsible as a breeder and/or owner. In fact, all one would be doing by breeding at this age without titles is puppy milling.

Dog1: "AKC allows dogs to mate earlier than 2 years old." Who cares what AKC allows? They allow all kind of crap. Igor, I know a breeder who have bred his male at 18 month of age, and I have heard him swearing that he will NEVER EVER do it again because he has ruined his dog. I am not sure what exactly happend to his dog, but as I understand thomthing went wrong with him physically or psychologically. That is without speaking of SV requirements. Some dogs mature much later than others, so you need to look at each dog individually. For some of them 2 years old is too early still, and some will be all right at 20 month.

I think it depends on the mental and phsycological ability of the dog. Just as with humans some are ready and mature at an early age and others are ready mentaly much later in life, but as mnm mentions a problem of puppy milling exisits and furthermore even though the dog might be ready from 12 months it physically is not ready especially the females as the females have a greater burden of responsibility.

The AKC rules should not come up in this kind of discusion. The AKC is all about money not about sound temperament, health and structure. The AKC rules on breeding dogs are simply outrageous, it is a joke. The person who follows the AKC breeding rules is a joker.
