I have a puppy who will be 4 months on the 27th this month. A couple of days ago I noticed he had a large swelling on the top of his head, at first it felt quite soft, the vet thought it was probably a haematoma maybe as a result of a knock while playing with the other dogs, he prescribed antiinflammatories for 3 days, but he said if it did not disappear we would have to check it out in case its an abscess. Today it seems to have decreased in size very slightly but now the lump feels hard.. This puppy has large, rather soft ears that have not yet gone up so I have been giving him gelatin, yoghurt and bones to chew, also half a glucosamine tablet a day for the last week as recommended by my vet. I hope none of this could have anything to do with the lump? Has anyone had a similar experience?

My Dog also had a lump on his head as a puppy that stayed there for almost 3 years. It was a clump of in grown hairs. This was almost cyst like to the touch and right on top of his head about the circumference of a nickle. It was getting larger very slowly until one day he was scratching his head and I notice it had broken open. There was a large pour noticable so I squeezed the "cyst" like a pimple and all of these gross hairs and thick brownish liquid came out. It has since pretty much "dried up" and has not returned. I don't know if yours is similar. My dogs lump was very noticable to other people when they pet him so it was quite large.

Thanks Kevin, I don¿t think its this though, my older dog developed a cyst on his back, he had it ages but it kept catching when I combed him, and eventually started to get bigger and ooze and bleed, so we had it removed. This lump is different, it is already quite a lot bigger, like egg-sized and at first it felt squishy as if filled with fluid but today it feels hard and bony???

I had 2 of my shepherds get lumps, they were more towards
their neck area, and one got the lump drained & stayed overnight,
and the other went home, they were both put on clavamox, (Good Stuff).........

Anyway, they were adult dogs, the vet was trying to tell me maybe they had a scoufle,
and it could stem from maybe them biting each other, but there were no marks to show
any kind of wound,.
I personally think, that at the time, I had a cat, and the dogs would sneak in the litterbox,
and eat cat - - - -, so ever since then, I have never had a litter box in my house, the cats an
outdoor cat anyway, but I thought it was a weird coincidence,

Also, the in grown hair theory sounds like something you should look into.

oso,

I have a 9 month old female wg showline who also has a pretty decent sized lump on the very top of her head.  I actually noticed it at least 3 or 4 months ago.  It is about the size of a silver dollar, perhaps a bit bigger and actually feels sort of flat and you can kind of lift it (meaning it is not attached to bone, just tissue).  It doesn't seem to cause her any pain and is not changing in size.  I've told the veterinarian about it and he said as long as it is not changing in size or oozing anything or acting like it's causing her a problem, not to worry about it.  I know it doesn't make me feel any better about what the heck it is but, I've been really considering having them do a biopsy of it so I know for sure.  It's right between her ears.

I would have thought your DVM would have given your pup an injection of Pen and sent home a supply of oral antibiotics for you to administer.

Are there any type of Vet Supply or Feed stores in your country where you can purchase Penicillin over the counter? If so, Pen BP-48 is very handy to keep around, when you have dogs. Its a longer lasting Pen and you administer the injection Sub-Q(under the skin). Just lift up the skin between the shoulder blades and inject. Same as a distemper-parvo shot.

Antibiotics are an option that should be tried before surgery.

I don¿t think my vet wanted to give antibiotics at first as there was no indication yet of infection and he thought the most likely cause was a knock on the head, I still have two of his sisters and other dogs so they play quite rough sometimes. I probably can get those antibiotics here but will wait until monday, if its still there he will see the vet again and investigate further. At the moment it does not seem to be causing him any pain, he is not off his food or lethargic, does not have a high temperature - just looks wierd!

Oso, I'll add this from past experience. Many years ago I had a young female who suddenly had a large area of swelling develop-between the ears on the back of the head. It was quite large (nearly golfball size), round, and firm and I thought it was possibly an allergic reaction or a reaction to an insect sting or arachnid bite.

I took her to a veterinarian who examined the area and said it was a hot spot. He shaved the area and there was no visible damage to the skin, and there was no serum leaking from the area. I argued with him about whether this was a hot spot-especially since it was in an area that a dog cannot lick and check. Nevertheless, he did prescribe several days of antibiotics and the swelling did subside and go away. It never ruptured, it never wept fluid, and it never reappeared.

Best Regards,

Bob-O

My girl did get a hot spot right between her ears this last summer but it was a typical oozing patch, unmistakable hot spot.  All it takes is an area with an irritation like a flea or fly bite, or an allergic rash that is invaded by opportunistic skin bacteria.  Of course if the area is moist for any reason it promotes the growth of those organisms.  As far as a lump, it could have been a minor cyst that went away due to the antibiotics.

did the vet check for a hole? maybe one of the other pups lost a tooth playing rough and its imbedded in the other ones head.. just a thought.
