Thrush? by DebiSue on 17 July 2012 - 17:22 |
I've noticed that the back of our pup's throat, way back is white instead of pink. I haven't wrestled him down to get a good look at it, just glimpse it when he has his head back and tongue lolling out. My first thought was Thrush but it actually looks more like a total lack of pigment back there. The rest of his throat , gums and tongue is perfectly pink. Has anyone else seen something like this?

Really? All these views and no one has a comment? No one has seen this or has an opinion? Deb

Thanks beetree. I will try...I may lose my camera to the little gator. LOL. Thankfully he has none of the symptoms listed on your link. I've seen thrush in babies and it doesn't look the same...It just looks like total lack of pigment deep at the back of his throat. Echo's is dark, almost black where it isn't pink so it just blew my mind to see it. Deb

That's what I was thinking... you don't notice any bumps so I'd think, not thrush. Can't say I even know what color my dog's back throat is... I'll see if he'll let me take a look and report back to you! .... Well, besides wondering what the heck I wanted from him, all I could see was a mix of black and pink, but I never quite got a look ALL the way back, damn tongue gets in the way! How did you even get a peek, is beyond me!

LOL! I got another peek yesterday...no camera at hand...looked more pink this time than white so thinking it's just a pigment issue. Looks healthy to me. Thanks!

white plaque can also be from nursing!

Thanks TinqiesandTails. He's weaned so nothing related to nursing. It just blew my mind mostly I think because our older dog has a dark mouth and gums etc...just a pink tongue and this guy has a totally pink mouth until you get to the back of his throat, then it turns dark but very, very light waaaay back in the back.

Just a related comment to your statement. Gums on quality GS dog should be black and not "perfectly pink" as you are saying! But that is a different issue. As far as the white spot goes. If I would observed white spot on my dogs mucous membrane then I would go to vet. Vitiligo or even cancer may be the cause. Hans
