Hired Dog

Apple, when it comes to bullets, everything and everyONE is of very limited use....
I carry daily, always have, but, before we resort to sending someone to meet their maker, if there is a dog available, why not see if we can change one's mind about his next move?
Believe it or not, 95% of people do change their mind when confronted by a capable dog that looks like it wants to get into a deep conversation with you.

Technically you can train any dog to "do" the work, but you really need to think about temperament first. If you take a dog that has weak nerves and train it you will end up with a loose cannon. Pick your prospective dog carefully. Bill Koehler has a writing on it in his guard dog training book. You can find it free in pdf. He walks you through picking a good prospect from an adult dog. I suggest you read that and get an idea of what to look for in a dog.

Actually, you cannot train most dogs to do protection work because they lack the temperament and drives needed.
Can you back tie a dog and beat it or threaten to beat it until it actually attempts to bite you, sure, but, again, proper decorum prevents me from explaining to you what I would like to do with these so called "trainers".
I have owned and read that book about 40 years a go and it was a good read and I am sure that in his time as a dog trainer during WWII, some of his methods applied, however, this is a different world with different needs and his ideas are not so valid anymore.

@ rivalt kennels, your point of view is basicly why i started this topic, you definately can not teach and train any dog to do the work, you can teach any dog to sit and roll over, and maybe bark on command, but you CANNOT train anything into a dog that they are geneticly are missing

cant teach a dog to be hard, strong, suspicious or civil, if they dont geneticly have that. period

I dunno Duke - I could probably train a nasty Chihuahua to bite your nose as I toss the dog in your face, once I take it out of my purse, of course. 😉😜

Hired as I said iv no issues with redirection as long as the dog is going forward for the hand leg that is going to cause damage .I also do not care where they bite.

Koots LOL, but only when he is nasty

Wait, seriously, what breed was it that Chinese emperors would hide under their big robe sleeves and toss them at the head of a would be attacker? Was it the shih Tzu?
Koots, one of the nastiest dogs I have ever met was a little Chi with Napoleon syndrome who used to terrorize anyone who he found walking around the apt complex I used to live at many moons a go.

of course any dog can be trained for almost any tricks but for start need to be separated apples from oranges - the dog, trained to imitate protection and a dog, capable for real protector role.

if CHI's weighed 40 lbs. (18.1437 kg) nothing in the world would be safe.
