This is almost inconceivable and I feel sickened after reading it. What a waste of good animals. How could anyone even watch something so horrific I would have run as fast and far away as possible; if people could do this to animals I am sure they could do it to humans without even a second thought. Very sad indeed.

There is a strong correlation between animal abuse/neglect and child abuse/neglect/domestic violence. and it is documented in professioanal and scientific literature.  This is why when we responded to animal abuse calls, we also investigated whether anything bad was happening to any of the human inhabitants/frequenters of a residence, and checked for animal abuse/neglect when we responded for domestic violence/abuse/neglect.

Some animal charities and police academies have classes on just this issue.

And t.b.h. most people's perception - of both the 'nastier' and any more 'ritualistic' (Sumo) versions - is like Nan's. "Don't want a bar of it !" Fair enough, but then you have to run classes to educate officers & others to the possibilities, and the extended effects, or they just do not 'see' them.

Mindhunt - your account of the dying dog in the ring brought tears to my eyes, and rage to my heart. I could not do the job of busting dog fights, as I would want to 'end' those inflicting that misery upon animals.

YES! Animal abuse is a key indicator to watch for signs of child abuse! It is not limited to children, it could be against a spouse, the elderly, the incapacitated, or simply those in the general public that lack the spine to stand up to the person.

Sadly, abused children far too often grow up to become abusive parents. It is almost a never ending cycle.

There is a small, very slow trend starting in the US, of some shelters now allowing the abused women to bring the family pet. So many spouses will not leave their abusive situation, stating they can't leave the dog, as they know the abusive spouse will then direct violence on the family pet in specific retaliation for the abused spouse leaving.  It is a tiny handful of shelters doing this, though it is at least a start.

Purina dog foods has started some sort of campaign to fund such shelters, that allow the family pet to be brought along. The word purple is someplace in the name. I will try to dig up info on the program & post it.

The Purina Purple Leash Project

ABOUT THE PURPLE LEASH PROJECT

The Purple Leash Project was born out of the Purina mission to bring and keep pets and people together and the RedRover® mission to bring animals and their owners from crisis to care.

I guess it is actually RED ROVER that is working to get pets into human shelter. At least Purina is doing something to help. :)

Purina is proud to partner with RedRover for the Purple Leash Project.

RedRover staff and trained volunteers support animals and people in crisis by providing financial assistance, resources and emotional support.

Through grants, collaborative renovation projects, workshops and more, they have provided thousands of safe nights for animal victims of domestic violence.

Over the last 13 years, RedRover has made great strides to protect and preserve the human-animal bond by collaborating with domestic violence shelters and service providers to ensure pets and people can escape abuse together.

A magazine ad for the Purple Leash Project prompted me to start supporting a family shelter that allows the pet to be brought along. I personally chose to donate directly to family shelter allowing pets, defining I wish my funds be directed to pet care needs there.

This also lead to my also sending monies to couple of pet food banks. One in the state I live in, & one in another state. Yes, there is such a thing as a food bank for pets for the poor. Though they seem to be very & far between.

The major portion of the pets food banks help seems to go the elderly & disabled.
