My vet who does hips and elbows got an excellent image in less then 5min without sedation so I disagree bantam7

Mine are all done without any kind of anesthesia. I bring them in and stretch them out and take a picture. Period.  It is not uncomfortable......and dogs with decent character don't have to be "trained" to lie on the table.  I haven't sedated any of mine in years and years.  It's not cruel......and if you think it is....you don't really understand how it's done.....it's simple, quick and easy.........

I would imagine that the quicker you are (and the more skilful you get at placing the dog), the easier this becomes; nothing but the most restless of dogs should find it too arduous to lie still for the seconds it takes to operate the machine. It isn't as though they are being asked to lie stretched for very long. I am sure this is how the radiologist, with my mentor's assistance, used to get good pix, some twenty years ago now.
