Susie, you obviously haven't seen some of the puppies I have WonderingTongue Smile

Seriously, I can think of pups I have seen @ 7 weeks (when helping with tattooing) who looked woefully under-angulated in the rear, who have surprised me by being rather better when I met them again, age (say) 14 months or something !  Don't forget I'm referring to pups which although they may be 'Germanic', may have one German Import parent, but often have considerable other, UK, influences at play.  Many but by no means all 'S/L' litters.

Tail-sets and probably ear-set I'd normally agree with you about.

I'm not talking extreme angulation here btw - its a while since I was last around anyone else's litter except those from my boss's dogs, which were not S/L, usually by a couple of intervening generations.  It might well be more pronounced these days, hind angulation extremes having progressed a bit (!).

But that is in pure GSDs.  If the Chinese 'fans' have mongrelised, by crossing in anything else, it would be more difficult for them to be sure.

If I wanted to quickly establish a mastiff head type within the breed, I would of course start with breeding characteristics that lean toward the type desired.  Like from the breeder shown in the examples below, crossing them with the bloodline I have already established possessing the characteristics I desire.

I would imagine that one could quickly lose other characteristics desired, if not carefully selective.

No need to go to Russia. This bad boy has one of those heads too. Probably the biggest head I've seen in West German Working lines in a while.

By Russians who value, and are used to seeing, Owtcharka, as much as they like GSDs ?

None of these dogs have Mastiff heads, in fact the heads are not even uncommon.  If these strong headed dogs were capable of producing the head type of the Chinese dogs, we would have seen at least one in their breedings

Are these Mastiff headed dogs being shown as GSD's in normal shows in China? I've never seen one in any of the Chinese show videos and the video where they are being shown does not show any GSDs

Yep, I certainly don't think those heads ^^^ have formed part of the Chinese variant.

There's a 28 sec video from "The Telegraph" "A dog life: Chinese Hold First Shepherd Dog Festival". (Bloomberg.com) showing the large heads-not quite as extreme as the photos indicate-could not get it to link.

Kaffirdog, if you read the whole thread, you'll see a couple of SV-rated Chinese dogs that I posted. One of them is a female that I think went VA1 in the equivalent of their Sieger show. The heads are bulky, but nowhere near as extreme as some of the examples posted here.

Edit: dogs are on Pg. 2. The female I referred to must be in one of the other threads about the Chinese dogs.

If only there was a big a deal of the state the SL is in and the damage that has been done over the years of course the pictures are a disgrace but what has happened to SL is exactly the same . Disfigurement is disfigurement
