Question about AI

Just a question to those of you who've done AI breedings.  What is your opinion about doing AI on a maiden bitch?  I've AI'ed several dogs in my past, but the only ones that ever took were dogs that had been bred naturally before.  I never got pups out of a maiden bitch that was AI'ed.  Do you think that there is a hymen in dogs that may cause the semen to not reach the eggs?  I just find it odd that my maiden bitches never took, but my others did.  Any insight/info on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I have done several AI's with maiden bitches. I have had success with all of them, but they were small litters. I am going to breed my new maiden bitch, she just turned 3 to a new stud and I am planning on AI if he cant get it done, this is his first breeding as well..hoping for good success! Were the maiden bitches bred naturally on the next heat? and did they conceive? I have heard from some older breeders that they had bitches that never conceived with AI but had litters when bred naturally. I look forward to others input..

Thanks for the answers. I've done alot of AI's at home myself as well, and again, only the maiden bitches didn't take, and I used same equipment/technique each time. But did get pups from those same maidens later when bred naturally.  Again, thanks for answering!

I will say as well that my maiden bitches were never ready before day 16...which was much later for some reason then my girls who had been bred before..they were ready around day 12.  I had to watch carefully and progesterone test as I usually ended up breeding the maiden bitch day 16,18 and 20 so its possible your breeding too early? Did you progesterone test for those breedings you missed?

The maiden bitch I had AI'd was done by the vet and it was a surgical AI as we used frozen semen from a dog who was deceased.  We tested and actually did the surgical implact on July 4th.  A wonderful litter of 7 beautiful puppies followed 63 days later right on schedule.

Are there vets that are more successful than others?  What qualifications are good to look for in a vet? What is the average cost of a surgical AI?  Interesting topic...lol.  I have questions as well.

Yes there are reproductive specialists that are way more qualified then "regular" vets. Just look in your area. We are lucky to have 2 in my area, Ky

Definately there are vets much more quaiified than others.  I am very fortunate that my regular vet is also one of the top repro vets in our area.  I can not comment to much as to "normal" costs as my vet is very reasonable, I think the surgical I did ran me about $300 which included all the testing.  Of course you have to add the cost of semen and shipping of the semen which is without a doubt the most expensive part.
